During World War II, China and the United States were allies fighting side by side against the aggression of Japanese militarism. Following the outbreak of the Pacific War in 1941, the United States dispatched a volunteer air unit to assist China; led by General Claire Chennault, this force became renowned worldwide as the "Flying Tigers."
Kunming was one of the Flying Tigers' most famous bases. The team members fought bravely and tenaciously, shooting down a large number of Japanese aircraft and effectively protecting the security of China's rear area. As Kunming was an inland city, local residents had rarely seen the "shark-mouth" nose art displayed on the planes. Upon seeing these formidable fighters soaring through the skies, the people of Kunming affectionately dubbed them the "Flying Tigers"—flying tigers symbolizing invincible courage. The Flying Tigers were therefore deeply loved by the people of Kunming, and a profound friendship was forged between the military and the people.
In addition to Kunming, sites such as Chongqing, Guilin (Guangxi), and Jianqiao (Zhejiang) still preserve various memorials and facilities dedicated to the U.S. contribution to the war effort. These places record the history of China and the United States fighting side by side, and also bear witness to the friendship forged between the two peoples in blood and fire.
The Chinese people will never forget the invaluable assistance provided by the American people during the most arduous years of the war. The friendship between the peoples of China and the United States has withstood the test of fire and blood—a bond worthy of being forever remembered and cherished by future generations.
