Special thanks to Lokey_DS, who I consulted on the specifics of the two different "Saint" terms. Lokey also pointed out the golden threads in the Innard Meat, and their potential relation to the story trailer, helping to establish the possible connection between the Jars and the Divine Gate.

One thing I've always felt about the Jar Saint theory is that Marika is maybe too cohesive to have been the product of such an unseemly methodology. Like the Mensis Brain, while there was some apparent merit to the work, the end result was repugnant and crude, better fitting the mountain of bodies that make up the Divine Gate. Additionally, the way the game talks about Radagon doesn't make me feel like it's inviting you to think about him as having an origin separate from Marika, but rather raising many questions that are all answered specifically by him arising from Marika to begin with.

Interestingly, if we think of the Mensis Scholars and the Hornsent as two points on a trending line, there is actually a potential third point between them with the Senpou monks. Their immoral and heretical study into immortality caused a litany of horrors, but also seems to have ultimately produced a Divine Heir of their own, potentially helping further establish this as a sort of running theme.

A little detail: The ones elevated to good persons/saints in the jar probably are mostly Hornsents, as the ghost we find begging to not being put there is a Hornsents. I fear the Shamans were literally just Glue for the Jars.

It should be remembered that the Shamans only served as the "centerpiece" of the Living Jar. They were the glue that bound it together. The other material, most of it, was composed of Hornsent criminals. The Hornsent civilization inflicted this atrocity on their own people, too. In these days, we should all strive to remember that a government is not its people. I don't even know if it can be.

People seem to assume that Marika had a trusted position in the Hornsents culture because she "betrayed" them but forget that for an abuser the victim resisting or revolting is a betrayal. For the Hornsents using the hornless Shamans as material rather than killing them was a favour to these not blessed individuals.
Given the Hornsents apparent belief in melting flesh together and the fleshy nature of the Gates could it not be supposed that Marika was either a favored material for the Gates or to be used as a catalyst to melt the divinity with an Hornsent flesh in order for the Hornsent to ascend?
Therefore her seizing divinity for herself is a betrayal of a sacrifice against the masters that gave her a "purpose'.

The translation of saint as good person, which is a secondary definition for the word in english even if its not commonly used, adds a bit of context to the companion jar talismans description "maybe they were made to be better than their insides" I thought that was just flavour text but no its literal.

the hornsent jar ritual is almost a mockery of the crucible, their hubris blinded them thorougly
the most important aspect of marika's ascent to godhood is that the hornset see it as a betrayal, just one term implies so much but without any clarity

i feel the need to remark the humor in the fact that we've been doing exactly the same as the hornsent, taking things literally when there was no such need

I’ve always subscribed to this theory of Marika being a victim of the hornsent in some way.

And her ascension was not what the hornsent wanted because she would have been ‘impure’

I imagine she spent years under their thumb and somehow managed to get on top.

When she did ascend she was hell bent avenging the years the shaman people had to go through.

I think her motivations boiled down to once being a little scared girl under the hornsent thumb, too weak to save her family and now with as a god she could but being a god was to be a prisoner, and the seeds of doubt slowly creeping in.

Marika had built walls around her, but when her favored child Gowdyn died, she was that same powerless girl in the shaman village all over again, not this all powerful god, she couldn’t protect her family then, and she couldn’t save them now, so she shattered the elden ring.

THe idea of the Living Jars in the Land of SHadow being this grotesque and horrific while those in the Lands Between being more noble and, for Jarburg at least, docile, is really thought provoking. And while it looks utterly hilarious and stupid, the Great Jar Helm being on a Marika statue quickly becomes morbid when you contemplate the lore. THANKS ZULLIE!!!

I like the theory that the Shamans's plight called out to the Greater Will much like the Wandering Merchant Folk's plight called out to the Yellow Chaos Flame. Marika learned the secrets of ascension from the Greater Will, then shared them with the Hornsent as a trick. When the Hornsent finished constructing the divine gate, Marika took it for herself and ascended. Her revenge was unending, but so too was her enslavement to the Greater Will. This is what leads her down the path of breaking the Greater Will's grasp on the Lands Between. She realized that her desperation had pushed her to sign her body and soul over to something that she didn't understand, and now she wanted out.
