Croatia had its own alphabet (Croatian Glagolitic) which was still used till the late 19th century, alongside Latin script. You might know it from the Witcher games, they borrowed it there.

By the way, the part at 20:45. if you translate Stjepan Radic from Croatian to English, you get Steve Jobs. 😆

Croats used the Glagolitic script before all the Slavs, and they also adopted Latin and Cyrillic. Incidentally, the first masses in the Slavic language, not Latin or Armenian, were conducted and written in Croatia.

Throughout Croatian history, the term Balkans is never mentioned, not even today. It is a political term invented in Britain during the "Balkan Wars" just 100 years ago in order to somehow define the area of that conflict. The Balkan Wars have nothing to do with Croatia. The entire film is shown from the perspective of the "Balkans", although Croatia's national, cultural, and every other perspective is Central European or "Mediterranean".

It's a pleasure to watch you learn, pause the video, do additional research for terms that are unclear to you.. And btw, even among the "stupidest questions", the only thing more stupid is remaining uninformed.. Greetings from Croatia! 😉

Before the mid-1800s, there was no single "standard" language. In Croatia, literature and daily life were split between three major dialects. It was only through the Vienna Literary Agreement (1850) and later Yugoslav state policies that a unified "Serbo-Croatian" standard was pushed to make the populations mutually intelligible for the sake of administration and unity.

Istria and Dalmatia: These regions have a heavy Venetian/Italian influence (Italo-Dalmatian), which adds vocabulary and grammar structures that are completely foreign to the Balkan interior.

The North (Zagorje): Influenced by German and Hungarian, making it very different from the Eastern dialects.

It's important to remember that the 'mutual intelligibility' we have today is largely a result of the Yugoslav era and the standardization of Serbo-Croatian. Before the 20th century, a Serbian speaker would have had a very hard time understanding many Croatian dialects. Even today, if you go to Istria or parts of Dalmatia, the local dialects are so heavily influenced by Italian and older Chakavian forms that someone from Belgrade or even Zagreb might not understand half of what is being said. The language was much more diverse before it was unified for political reasons.
