I worked at a used car dealership as my first job. I was hired as a mechanic. I had basic experience, such as brakes, suspension, power door locks ect. I started at $10 an hour. I replaced the mechanic they had, which was an experienced master tech, but he was getting way more than $10 an hour. I would do a lot of brake jobs, power windows and power door locks. I gained a lot of experience and could do timing belts engine swaps pretty much anything. When I look back I saved them so much money and they took full advantage of me and my skills. I was doing brake jobs for just the money for parts and $20 paid to me, under $300 dollars for parts and labor. I did engine swaps, that took only a day, which I was paid $80. $80 for the labor of an engine swaps. I’d do brake jobs all day long, multiple clutches, engine swaps all in one month, and would get under a $1000 pay check. When you say a business is there to make the owner rich you are not kidding! Those guys couldn’t give two shits about me, and used me to the full extent. Before I left I had the shop fully set up. They paid for it all but I was the key to the success, I had a lift installed all specialty tools from scopes, to scanners. I even had a separate office set up for service. I eventually caught on and quit them and moved on. But man did I feel like that shop was mine, I was just a kid and didn’t realize what I was worth. Only getting $10 an hour for the first couple years, and was at $16 an hour when I quit. When an average shop rate is $80-$150 an hour. All that money spent on the lift and tools was the money they were saving\not paying me. My ignorance though, and that’s when I learned to not trust people.

I've been a licensed dealer for 5 years now. Everything you said about trying to scale is 100% true. I spent the first 3 years just trying to sell more and more cars month after month. I got burnt out. I switched to a buy here pay here business model and now I'm happy with selling only 5 cars per month. They rest of the time just sit back and collect payments.

The biggest question is how much money did you start with. It seems like you started with lot of money

your learning lessons the same way I did by doing it, but you're a lot quicker at making changes because you work for yourself. I don't know you, but I'm proud of you

Just for inspiration purposes, can you tell me how much money you started out with for the idea of the business?

What platforms are selling on? Right now we just use marketplace and sit on cars/trucks for 30-70 days and have them priced well below MMR retail and other comps. Thanks
