As an American that lived in the Philippines some of it during Martial Law and was there during People Power. I do not have a political opinion one way or the other. I do observe this, there are new politicians now, but I still see the same poverty today as I saw when I was there in 1974.

Great piece. It breaks my heart thinking about how him and his party's greed has held back the Philippines. We could have been on the same level on the world stage as Singapore if not for the short-sightedness and ego of these few self-proclaimed elites. Even more heart-breaking that these lessons have so quickly been forgotten. And an amazing shout out for showing both sides, but I hope we can all agree that he was a despot, and a painful lesson that I hope we can learn from before it's too late again.

i was in 2nd year HS, "May Bagong Silang ..." started blaring from radio stations, i thought it is all the right thing but then realization dawn on me, Martial Law was just way to perpetuate in power, 21 years is wrong, unjustifiable - all greed for power!

My Dad, a military personnel at GHQ, long before sep 21, cautioned my brod and cousin to be cautious of joining student rallies like those of KM and others

“Let be bygones be bygones” if so give me back my money!! (And paused a little) then come up with the idea of somehow reprimand for the losses of those who suffered mainly the poor and less fortunate.. politics 101

I was in the Philippines during the last presidential election. It was a very nervous time in the Manila. I got a cab earlier in the day, the driver told me a story on how his elders were tortured and murdered by the military during the Marcos regime. Most of them didn’t even have a political opinion. Everybody that was for Marcos kept repeating “forgive and forget.”

I have several family members suffered during Martial Law. People from the north mostly praise Marcos while central and south part of the Philippines experienced horrors. These testimonies pretty much true

Not forgetting that America welcomed him with the state bank of the Philipinnes. Stolen money was good money for America.
