Russia does not lack $8 billions for a port. The reason they include foreign investors is to increase traffic when the port is completed. The port will still be majority Russian owned, benefit from more foreign traffic and get more in taxes with the secondary advantages with more visitors.

When China use the new Arctic shipping route, the West suddenly see it as a security threat. Hilarious!

Russia has over 40 trillion in natural resources, it doesn't find financing difficult at all.

This will reduce the risk for China through the much discussed Malacca Strait chokepoint. Too bad for the conniving US forces who will do anything to defeat and encircle emerging China. It is gratifying to see US hegemony being thwarted through cooperation between US adversaries. Kudos to China and Russia!

Rail connection would reduce transit times by at least a 1/3.
Rail is notoriously overpriced which is why these sea routes are viable.
Trucks are a possibility too. But they can't move bulky volume such as grains, coal economically over distance.
There is an economic principle called the Blue Economy that says by 2035 all commerce or 85% will be 75 miles from the nearest sea port.

I'm not fully sold on the 20–25 day advantage yet. Ice conditions and the rail schedule seem like they could change the calculation pretty quickly.

the so called threat is because the western powers have zero say let alone infuence or power with the arctic sea route. also it has no war or pirates to deal with.

THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO!!!! I knew of this city but it wasn't until 2 weeks ago I watched two 1 hour long videos on it, and it blew me away because I thought the only city as large and sophisticated (not built like an outpost) in Russia was Murmansk....

When Russia widens the White/Baltic Sea Canal the Arctic Silk-Road is really going to expand, and will allow building the Arctic Railway (from Norway to Bearing Sea) feasible, and will turn this city into an even more vital city within the global trading network .....

The White Sea throat is only 121 feet deep at its deepest and Russia should eventually build a bridge over it and or a tunnel under it, and it may be able to have an island(s) in its mist because this would allow for a high-speed railway box between Moscow/Arkhangelsk/Murmansk/St. Petersburg.... This would fully open up the Western Arctic region and make developing the rest of the Arctic worth it... The Arctic Coast should have dozens of small cities and many towns and villages, because north/south railway lines could link them to the rest of the world along with the rivers the main cities would be on, even if Central Siberia and Far-East may take far longer to fill due to infrastructure needs (railway base tunnels threw the Urals).....
