An incredibly touching family story with so many exciting details. Make your way of life and find your happiness, in Germany or wherever you want and can. 👍

Greetings from a Frenchman from Guadeloupe, French West Indies, who came to Germany via Paris 31 years ago to complete his vocational training and stayed and also found happiness here (20 years now married to a woman from Gabon who came to Germany as a student and we have 7 children).🙂

I was in the states until the age of 12. For me the American dream was the huge house with a swimming pool and every family member has a car. In America it seems your only considered successful when you have much more then your fair share. Being average is considered being a failure. It it is not reachable for the majority. You have to win at life by being better then the others. In Germany it is totally acceptable to rent an apartment and spend your weekends in a schrebergaten. As long as your happy, your winning.

I am german and I can remember my parents talking about America as the land of possibilities when I was a child. I was stunned when someone told me that the American dream is over when I was a teenager. Now I am 53 years old I am so glad to live in Germany, I visited the US twice and would go back for a vacation but certainly not in the next years.

Your story is such an amazing story and as an immigrant I can relate. As a whole we have to remember immigrants are what makes up America, but keep telling your stories and stay strong and blessed ❤️

Hello Pauline, my niece is from Texa. She's studying in Germany to become a veterinary and she loves it. I do fully support her for that as I'm her godfather. In the USA, she could never ever have done this kind of studies, just because she couldn't afford it financially to follow her dream job. She does it now in Germany.

Oh Paulina, what did you do? With your shout out you made an old man blush. 👴😊 Never happened before, thank you!
First things first: I wish you a smooth and safe trip to visit your family in the US. I hope your grandma still recognizes you due to her illness as I personally know the hardships in regards of it. My mom passed away in 2019 after many years of having dementia and now my dad is on the same horrible path.
Thanks much for this really touching, personal episode. To be honest, I can understand your grandmother's question, “Why Germany?” very well when you know the background and the difficulties she went through to build a better life for herself and her children. Her own upbringing by nuns, the American mentality, and the American media all contributed to her belief that America was the best country in the world. She never had a real chance in her life to know any better. She never had a real chance in her life to know any better and did everything she could to make the best possible life. To become aware of this, you really need to have the opportunity, time, and money to travel abroad and gain your own experiences, or have a strong desire for change in order to inform yourself.
BTW, even I - a German living in Germany my whole life have my own personal experience / thoughts about immigration. Anyway, it's not something for YouTube, but if you want to know more, we could call each other, chat, or meet up in a café in Munich (you, your friend, and me) to talk about it.

Hey Paulina, I'm a 61year old German Guy, not shure of describing my thoughts correctly in english...but I'll trie...
Thank you for your very deep personal and emotional post on your channel...
It touches me...more than I would've expected...
'cause my family at father's side had to prove in the "Nazi-Time" that we're actually no "foreign Immigrants" because of our apparently non-german last-name "Esperester"...
I'm glad to know and it'd been proven by papers in 1939, that my family back to my grand-grand-grand-father had arrived in Bayreuth since 1780...maybe a refugee as a Protestant Priest from Hungaria during the Re-Katholic-Time as Exiliations / Immigrigants...this is too far ago to be proven
...but so far as I know about my own research of this time and my ancestors...this was a very hard time of fleeing and setting in Katholic-South Germany...just Regensburg, Ortenburg, Passau and Bayreyth accepts Protestent- Refugees at this time...very welcome as cheap labors...honestly more half- slavery-work...at this breaking new time in Europe... between handcraft work, manufacturing pre-industrial and industrial-work with all that new machines uprising...work of people...working their ass off their lives...but nothing worth...mostly standing off between 1780-1880 (Weberaufstände)...this was the time my forfathers came to Germany...and it reminds me of what you describe of all that hope and dreams similar to "the American Dream"...or maybe "the Promised Land" of the Jews...or whatever You personally want to achieve...
I think, the main difference between US and Europe esp. Germany is the great Difference in History...
We, in Germany and most of the Europe Nations have a special historical and kultural European History of more than 2.000 - 10.000 Years...whereas Northamerica / the US is just a Big Big Country of lownesome Foreigneirs in their own land with Guns in their hands and foreign lownesome Cowboys
...each one resonsible for himself as a half-Slavery working his ass off...for what???...Whereas like Europe...we've 100-200 Years of more Experience with this modern Structures, and 2.000 - 10.000 more Experience with diverse kultulural and belief-orientation
...please: "You Young Country"... learn of us...we have much to tell...

Ihre Vergleiche regen mich an – auch wenn ich die USA noch nie besucht habe.

43:45 this is soooooooooo relatable and true in my opinion! My pay increased and I feel like I waste my money buying things at times! My German dream is to move to Germany, find a job that gives me more time to enjoy life, weekends, travel (nothing extravagant), feel more balanced, less (eliminate) back pain from sitting for work all day, enjoy the walkable lifestyle (and public transport), open the door for other family members who are interested to be exposed to a different lifestyle.

Thank you for sharing this story! This really broke my heart but also I’m happy that your grandmother was able to achieve citizenship. Like all of your podcast episodes this was a really good one ❤

The first time I was in the US, it was an absolute highlight for me, because I was there as a visitor. Now I go there regularly to work and get to know the everyday routine, and I have to say, no, I couldn't live there permanently.
