  Gordon at the end mages a great point about the helicopters and since it is such an important point, there&apos;s actually more detail that illuminates how that mistake was made. Comes from General Norman Schwarzkopf&apos;s autobiography.<br><br>During the formal military talks at Safwan, the leader of the Iraqi delegation, Lieutenant General Sultan Hashim Ahmad, asked for permission to fly helicopters inside Iraq. Ahmad framed the request as an urgent administrative and humanitarian necessity, pointing out that Coalition air strikes had obliterated Iraqi infrastructure, cutting roads, destroying bridges, and disabling communications networks. He claimed the regime needed helicopters to transport government officials, food, medical supplies, and relief across the country.<br><br>Seemed like a reasonable request and Schwarzkopf was focused on the terms ensuring they didn&apos;t fly them anywhere near coalition forces. <br><br>In Schwarzkopf&apos;s own words, &quot;In the following weeks, we discovered what the son of a b*<b>*</b> had really had in mind: using helicopter gunships to suppress rebellions in Basra and other cities.&quot;

  Don&apos;t forget Dr David Kelly! He knew that the intelligence was wrong and that the British government was exaggerating a dossier on Iraq&apos;s weapons capability. It was a contrived story to justify the 2003 invasion. He took his own life as a result.

  If you do cover Reagan&apos;s Iran-Contra &quot;Wall of Crazy&quot; the US historian Sean Munger has made an interesting video covering it. &nbsp;Well worth a look at as he&apos;s an academic and gives sources.<br>On the first Gulf War not invading Iraq to topple Saddam, much of the intelligence on WMD had not been put together, it took air recon analysis to realise the &quot;giant frisbee&quot; machines revealed by an airstrike were a copy of the WW2 Oakridge enrichment plant for example.<br>Occupying Iraqi cities was NOT what the coalition was there for, I really don&apos;t think it was realistic to invade and the presumption was after the punishing defeat that Saddam would lose authority and be toppled.<br>It was Norman Schwartzkopf who allowed the Iraqi army helicopters to carry machine guns, used to put down rebellion by the Marsh Arabs and others in the south.<br>It&apos;s a temptation of hindsight to think they made a mistake leaving Saddam to cling on, but look how Bin Laden responded to the USA defending Saudi. &nbsp;If that had become an offensive to impose regime change, very many Arabs would have reacted similarly.
