How can a frog freeze solid and survive? Because the wood frog doesn't fight the ice — it manages it. It lets ice form in the spaces around its cells while keeping ice out of the inside of them, and it does that by flooding its own bloodstream with sugar before the freeze finishes. The ice is real. The frog survives because of where the ice is allowed to grow.
A frozen wood frog has no heartbeat, no breathing, and no detectable brain activity. Roughly two thirds of its body water has turned to ice. Field studies in interior Alaska have tracked frogs staying frozen for over six months, with body temperatures dropping below −10°C and in some cases past −16°C.
The trigger is the first touch of ice on damp skin. That contact seeds a crystal in the frog's own tissue and sets off a hormonal alarm, and the frog has a few hours of work to do before the freeze reaches its core. Its liver — oversized and packed with glycogen going into autumn — starts chopping those chains apart and dumping free glucose into the blood. Blood sugar climbs to levels that would be a medical emergency in a human, and the still-beating heart delivers it to every cell it can reach before the blood itself freezes.
That sugar does three jobs at once: it lowers the freezing point of the remaining liquid so the freeze stops partway, it stops cells shrinking past the point of collapse, and it holds membranes and proteins in shape when the water around them is gone.
This video also covers why "frozen solid" is inaccurate, why slow freezing saves the frog and fast freezing kills it, why snow cover matters more than you'd expect, how the frog thaws from the core outward so the heart restarts before the legs soften, the clotting and reperfusion problems hiding in the thaw, and why this can't be scaled up to a human.

FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS
Q: How does a wood frog survive being frozen?
A: When ice touches its skin, its liver breaks down stored glycogen and floods the blood with glucose. The sugar lowers the freezing point of the fluid inside cells, stops them shrinking past collapse, and stabilises membranes. Ice forms around the cells, not inside them.
Q: Is a frozen frog actually dead?
A: No. It has no heartbeat, no breathing and no detectable brain activity, but its cells keep running anaerobically at a crawl. Metabolism drops to something like a pilot light rather than stopping.
Q: Does a wood frog freeze completely solid?
A: No. Roughly two thirds of its body water becomes ice, filling the body cavity and the spaces between cells. The cells themselves hold liquid water the entire time — that's the whole trick.
Q: How long can a wood frog stay frozen?
A: Field studies in interior Alaska recorded frogs frozen for over six months, at body temperatures below −10°C and in some cases past −16°C.
Q: How does the frog's heart start again?
A: It thaws from the inside out. The core tissues thaw before the limbs and skin, so the heart is liquid and able to beat while the outer body is still frozen. It typically restarts within about an hour of thawing.
Q: Why can't humans survive freezing the same way?
A: An adult human holds around forty litres of water. The outside would stay frozen for hours while the core was still warm and metabolising, there's no way to get a protectant into every cell before ice arrives, and human cells lack the tolerance for months of oxygen deprivation and extreme dehydration.
ACCURACY NOTE
This video draws on field studies of overwintering wood frogs in interior Alaska, published research on cryoprotectant mobilisation and freeze tolerance in amphibians, and comparative work on freeze avoidance in insects, fish and hatchling turtles.
