What stuck with me most wasn't the confessions — it was how ready everyone was to forget them once she recanted.
Like society needed her to be innocent.

I'd love to hear from her grandkids about what kind of person she was.

Kids are as capable of evil as anyone else. They’re people.

Most psychopaths do not kill people. They know that they would get in trouble and they conform. They just don't feel guilt. Most learn what is socially acceptable and try to pretend they are normal. What is in their best interest is not getting in trouble. It's sadistic psychopaths who seek out hurting people. I wonder if Alsa was too young to realize that there were very serious consequences to her wanting to get rid of these people that caused her unhappiness. This experience taught her that she would get in serious trouble and learned her lesson.

It’s totally possible that Alsa did exactly what she had claimed…but once she was put in a more stable, loving environment with her father she was able to develop a healthy perspective and behaviors. Children are malleable and resilient. I saw a documentary about a little girl who was considered a sociopath, she was cruel, violent, and combative. She was brought to a woman who was a psychologist (I think) who had developed a therapeutic approach around caring for farm animals and just wholesome farm living with love…and the child was transformed.

So is she a serial killer. A cereal killer. Or a serial cereal killer?

I think the most shocking thing here is that Grapenuts taste so bad that they can cover the taste of pesticides.

Boarding your children, even at young ages, was common in the US. My Dad was boarded at age 6 & his sister was boarded (at this same time) age 8. This was because my grandmother, a single mom, had no food & very little money to feed & take care of her kids. She also had a 3rd child, age 4 who stayed with her. My Dad lived at a farm as a farmhand. He was provided food, clothing, shelter (he slept in the hay loft with the other farmhands). He was also given pay at the end of the week which he took home to his Mom, so she could buy food for herself and the younger sister. When he was not needed at the farm, he lived with relatives who had food & he was able to go to school at that time, November -March or April.

one thing that stands out to me is the repeated pattern of one or more adults telling her that something (glass, battery acid etc.) would kill a person - it seems curious...she basically says 'an adult told me this will kill someone...' over and over. Maybe this is a subconscious indication of adult manipulation and only half the story or just coincidence but this pattern seems important to me.

What I don’t like is how people are so quick to “defend” a child when they are more than capable of doing horrific things to others. Just to name a few: Mary Bell, Jon Venables & Robert Thompson, Jesse Pomeroy, Cayetano Godino…& that doesn’t even include the numerous school “you-know-what” events.

I’m leaning toward she did do it, she’s capable of it & certainly had opportunity. I think people, & society, needed her to be innocent for their own sanity, but her motive is just “she liked it”, plain & simple. These people do exist in this world.

They say kids can't be evil but I used to babysit one! His name was Nathan and this happen in Canada. So this kids was only 6 and he had a older brother 9 and 2 younger brothers ages 4 and 6 months. Nathan would hang cats out his bedroom window by their tails , looked me dead in the eyes with his but blue dead eyes .. smile and pored hot coffee in his mother's lap not braking eye contact with me even tho his mom is standing up and screaming. He Sparta kicked hus 4 year old brother in to a river and watched him drown till my mom saved him...But then one of the worst part was when he took his brothers arm and held it to the woodstove not even pulling away when he was burning the tips of his own fingers!!! Among over things... Evil kid

I have been a special education teacher for 15 years, there have been three students who have had a similar diagnosis. The one thing in common which prevented early intervention was the failure of the adults who could have intervened at critical junctions and the lives lost as a result. While mental illness and mental health conditions are real, so are the consequences of ignoring and neglecting to acknowledge the red flags. Very tragic story.
