Guys, we are deep in the depths of the British winter so I had to record this with no sunlight 😆 But I’ve wanted to make this video for a long time. I’m glad I could bring it to life for you today. I write about this stuff all the time so if you want more, subscribe to the newsletter here: http://thelongplay.substack.com

What's depressing is that Serie A should be the most exciting league at least outside of the premier league because they have so many big teams capable of winning trophies, unlike Bundesliga, La Liga or Ligue 1

I genuinely believe that you should write a book about sports! Your approach connecting sports-politics-economics-culture is amazing! Keep going man!

Italian sports used to rule the world, now Serie A and its teams are in decline, Ferrari haven’t won a F1 title since 2008(and are ruining the last years of Lewis) and the Azzuri might miss three world cups in a row💔 at least they have Jannik Sinner

Something I thought I would add. I was in Da Nang (Vietnam) back in November and at a night market and noticed that a bnunch of the security guards there were not paying attention to their surroundings and instead watching an Arsenal match on a tablet. The guards were all in their late 30's to early 50's. Vietnam has the loosest of connections to the UK. If they were gonna watch a football match, it should be something form Ligue 1. Find out later that when VIetnam was still a third world country in the 90's and just opening up, the Premier League was the only league that had rights available for purchase. It seems small at the time but that was a country of 100 million people who love football and grew up with the English game as kids even though the Italian league back then was objectively better. So you have an audience of 100 million people that grew up watching ManU, Arsenal, Chelsea instead of Inter, Juventus, MIlan not because the Prem was better but because Serie A didn't have the foresight to think that maybe some people on the other side of the world may have wanted to watch R9 instead of Vinnie Jones.

This is why politics is linked to football. Italy also has a struggling economy, many kids are likely not pursuing football and pursuing other careers that guarantee stability.

Poorly run, corrupt, hindered by bureaucracy, can´t innovate - Italian football is a metaphor for Europe as a whole.

Serie A in 2005 had already passed its best. The 2 best players in the world had left and Italian teams weren't dominate as they were in the 90s.
