What's amazing is they were able to record those stabs back in the 90s, In a Cave, with a box of scraps!

Just to be clear for those who might be confused, the preset is called CLAV on the DX7 but to be specific this stands for CLAVINET, the electric clavichord instrument, not clave, the latin percussion instrument.

The stab in 'James Brown is dead' is one of my favourites. That Electric Light Orchestra sample really pulled me into EDM.

You know what’s insane about this- regarding formants- this is a huge secret to Neuro bass where we make these formants artificially with an eq to make the bass essentially vocalize in the low mid range.

Even with this knowledge I never had an academic explanation for that until now. Thanks!

What you have brilliantly explained in this video is the reason why I can never stay away from playing with the Rave Generator rompler for very long. Pretty much every famous 90s stab you can think of in there, ready to go.

Dude, little is said about these one shots used in classic house music melodies, with a lot of effort I managed to create these one shots based on synth chords with cut pianos, with a sequence of tape effects chorus and a lot of compression.thanks for finally revealing how it's actually done.

I took two semesters of electroacoustic music composition at a very well respected music school (that let visual arts kids like me take courses like those) and own Curtis Roads' book and this is the best explanation of formants I've ever heard. Bonus points for not using vowels until the end. You just earned your self a click of the like button, the subscribe button, and the ringing of the bell.

Whenever you played the landlord tab, I sang “Understand This Groove.”

I was using these sounds in 1990, and also making a lot of sample discs from records like the ones you showed, but almost everyone, like 99 out of 100 people at least producing beats and house at the time were buying and pirating discs and later CDs that had all the stabs, pianos, vocal bits, breaks, etc, and the most advanced processing you could do at that time was granular pitch shifting, which was just called pitch shifting because there were no other advanced sample processing functions or algorithms at all
