my wife and i have been living in cuenca, ecuador for 14 years. early on i was a digital nomad before that phrase was even a thing. now i've been retired since 2019 ( 71 years old now ) and every time my wife and i think about moving somewhere else ( we've explored spain, portugal, chile, argentina, and colombia ) we reach the same conclusion; why move anywhere? cuenca, ecuador is a great place to live. and both of us have visas that are good for another 6 years. i really enjoyed medellin when we spent 1 month there in 2016, but at that time the visa process wasn't so easy. we would have had to apply to renew our visas each year for 5 years before we could apply for a permanent visa at a cost of nearly $3000 each. in ecuador, our retirement visas are good for 10 years and it cost us a little bit over $3000 for both of us to acquire our permanent visas. life here in cuenca is a pretty good life.

Thanks for sharing you two. I have a special place in my heart for Ecuador after being down there in 94/95, Sad to see the security situation has deteriorated. It has the largest biodiversity of any country on the planet, a rich culture, and should be a thriving country and tourism/investment/retirement destination.

Hello Matt, As peruvian myself both Colombia and Ecuador are beautiful countries. Ecuador has beautiful cities like Cuenca or Guayaquil and people is nice and somehow timid and reserved while colombians are extrovert and talkative. Both are friendly people but having different styles. One of the best things in Ecuador are the cities that are clean and well organized. Peru is building a 500v high voltage powerline that will provide Ecuador of electricity during power outages in the future. Peru supports Ecuador in every real tough situation like the last wildfires in Loja during 2024 or the massive earthquake in 2017. As a side note , the huge Humboldt cold current influences the climate only in Peru. It turns westward in Piura region , northward (Ecuador) the water temperature increases producing a lot of rains in the coast. That is why most of Peru desert coastal cities has very mild climates . Temperatures from 28°C in a hot day in summer to 15°C in a cold night winter. The average temperature 20 to 22°C . Why mentioning Humboldt current ? because it shaped the Peru's history deeply. That is exclusively to Peru and its other name is Corriente Peruana. Y
This current is really huge. More than 2x the Colombia's surface. This current brings so many nutrients to the sea. The wild hyper abundance of fish and seafood created a lot of civilizations next to the ocean like Caral , Chimu, Mochicas, Pachacamac , etc. I'm optimistic about Ecuador's future and South America in general. ❤

Amazing video. There was really useful information in there. I would absolutely love similar style videos about Panamá vs Colombia and Costa Rica vs Colombia

Nobody talks about the ticket prices in Ecuador, if you are 65 and you fly out of any airport in Ecuador abroad or locally, the plane ticket fares are like half of the normal price. So there is a significant savings if you travel and you are 65, when it is time to fly anywhere! I have family in Medellin, before 65 around 600, after 65 around 300 roundtrip.

Can’t wait to visit Loja! I had my gallbladder out, laparoscopic surgery - public hospital (won’t do that again) my 2 nights, surgeon and anesthesia fees were $149.50
Meanwhile, my brother’s neurologist at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore said he paid $200 to PARK at a FIFA game, ticket was $4k 😳

I lived in Quito 10 years ago, and I loved it. That's a very nice city. At that time it was a beautiful place to live. In general terms, Ecuador is a good option to be considered. But for now, I will stay in Colombia for a while.
