※ This video is an excerpt from Architectural Exploration: Houses - The House That Saved a Family , which aired on August 18, 2026. Andong, where traces of wildfires remain everywhere. If you go quite a distance up past the temporary housing for disaster victims, today's house comes into view. With a neatly arranged yard, rows of earthenware jars, and a single house visible at a glance, this place is a special sanctuary gifted by a son to his mother, built upon the pain of the wildfire. The mother's home, which had stood firmly since her son was born, was completely obliterated by last year's wildfire in Andong. Having lost her home in an instant, she ended up in temporary housing for disaster victims. While it was fortunate to be able to stay in a safe place, life in a container was not easy for a mother who had spent her entire life cultivating a spacious yard and fields. It was then that the mother, who had always been active, began to lose her vitality. Unable to simply stand by and watch her mother suffer, her son, Sang-woo, resolved to build a new house there. For Sang-woo, time was the most important factor, and he wanted to restore his mother's vitality as soon as possible. That is how he came to choose a modular house. Since his mother would be living alone, the son's primary concern was that the house "should not be too big." He planned a 15-pyeong (approximately 50 square meters) size that would be manageable for his mother to handle herself, and designed the living room to be spacious so that while she lives alone most of the time, all five siblings could gather and spend time together on weekends. To alleviate the stifling feeling his mother might have felt in the narrow space of the container, he installed a large window in the living room. He also added windows in the living room, kitchen, and master bedroom to ensure good cross-ventilation. Furthermore, considering his mother's frequent movement between the vegetable garden and the fields, he placed an entrance next to the kitchen. For his mother, who enjoys sitting on the deck watching the yard and the people passing by, he lowered the height of the main gate, made the yard as wide as possible within manageable limits, and planted trees at a height that would not obstruct the view. The son's thoughtfulness for his mother can be found throughout the house. Working away from home, the son found it difficult to visit Andong frequently. Lacking the time and leisure to oversee the construction process, as well as professional knowledge of architecture, he decided to actively utilize AI. He shared his opinions about the house with the AI and resolved his questions one by one. Although it was a standardized modular home, he used the AI to meticulously review the architectural plans, checking for additional necessary parts, modifications, estimated quotes, and construction costs. The AI carefully identified even small details he hadn't considered; given that the house had once experienced a wildfire, his son’s thorough inspection led the AI to suggest installing a diffusion-type fire extinguisher. They also considered fitting the home's lifestyle, such as installing a back door next to the kitchen. Since he was not an expert, he actively utilized the AI to fill in his gaps and made decisions step by step while learning. The yard is also a space completed in collaboration with the AI. When he commissioned the final landscaping design, the AI suggested images, necessary materials, and estimated construction costs. Thanks to this, he was able to complete the yard he desired while reducing unnecessary expenses. ▶ Watch Full Version : https://www.ebs.co.kr/ ▶ If you want to read the EBS documentary as an article, https://egloos.com/ebsyoutube ✔ Program Name : Architectural Exploration of Houses - The House That Saved a Family ✔ Broadcast Date : 2026.08.18
