The Mistake That Doomed Every Japanese Attack on Guadalcanal

"Fortress Jungle" did as much as anything else to save Henderson Field from Japanese capture! Aside from the first 900 man assault, the 6,000–7,000 strong forces would have succeeded on less rugged, more predicable terrain. Moving 15–18 miles took 5–7 days as troops became lost, exhausted, and short on supplies in the dense jungle. Instead of one devastating coordinated night attack, their scattered arrivals over two or three nights let the Marines defeat each element (though barely) as they showed up💪
