nah, the notebook binary space partitioning part was absolute cinema. Even my brain made a click noise when the drawing was complete with those lines added

If this eventually become open source, I have a feeling it would be king of it’s own little realm

bro your description of your own reasons for making a game engine ngl made me reflect on why I wanted to make games without an engine. it's for similar reasons. I want total control over the data structure and optimization of my games instead of relying on someone else's implementation because I run modern but modest hardware and have been sick of this modern dev culture that promotes stagnation. you've given me motivation to program again and that's usually in short supply thank you. and sorry for the wall of text😅

I used to make maps for Half-Life 2 and Gmod! I'd spend hours in hammer and completely lose track of time. In the last year or two I attempted a return to game dev, and the mesh-ness of it all made it really hard for me to find that same interest and flow state as before. I always assumed it was because I am older now, but the thought of a new brush based engine actually really got my creative gears turning. Best of luck brother!

As a godot engine dev I have massive respect for custom engines and those that build them. Godspeed!

this was such a refreshing video to watch, just one man, no ai , no nothing, going against the world and listening to his thoughts instead of the world to create something he desires, that is a commendable achievement, a worthy video for 200+ rewatches

Looking at all those little tricks the id devs had to make the games they did really makes you appreciate what trailblazers they must've been back in the day. Imagine being the guy who came up with BSP for the first time.

I am also making my own engine completely from scratch for my own half-life game. Seeing that someone else was working on something similar is really cool.

Love to see this! I had a very similar intro to game dev with mapping for source games a years ago and now use monogame to make games. I can't wait to see more from this project!
