Seeing this 6 months late but so glad you spoke on this. I have benefitted from your videos on Calvinism. I was quietly waiting on for you to speak on this subject in more detail. I have been struggling making the commitment to KJV as I have the arguments against it in my head and little time to study it out while caring for littles. Thank you for sharing so I can reflect on this more.

A thought provoking video! I’ve been reading through the Bible (cover to cover) over the last 12 months and will complete my plan early next month. I have used various translations include the NKJV, NASB, NLT and Tanakh. My next step is commence “study” and of late I’ve listened to several arguments and persuasions for the KJV and personally feel convicted this is the right course of action. Thank you for your research and valuable insight into the KJV. May God bless you.🙏

You’re much more knowledgeable and better educated than me on this, and your arguments presented here have strength—so I’m truly not trying to be argumentative; but respectfully, I do have a couple of items to offer, if I may:

1) You cast some doubt on the translator notes in the NKJV (notes which are normally considered one of its great strengths) because of a psychological impact you believe they have that leads to undermined confidence in God’s Word; but the King James itself always had its own translator marginal notes, questioning the translation, right from the first 1611 printing on. I’m unclear why the KJV notes don’t undermine confidence in the way you suggest, but the NKJV notes (or other translations’ notes) do. Is it perhaps because, while the KJV translators’ notes do question translation, they don’t focus on other text sources like the notes in other translations?

2) As you point out, “thou,” “thy,” etc. are in fact more precise than today’s English, and aren’t the problem. Nor is the English of the KJV as a whole outdated. You’ll hear some people say that the KJV is “Old English” or “Middle English”—which of course it isn’t, at all. If you want to see Old English, try reading Beowulf untranslated; you won’t be able to make out anything. If you want to see Middle English, try reading the Prologue to the Canterbury Tales untranslated; you’ll be able to make out most of it, with effort, but probably not absolutely all of it. No, the KJV is absolutely Modern English, just like today’s English. The only issue is that there are words in the KJV that meant one thing in 1611 Modern English, and we still use those same words today, but they mean something entirely different in today’s Modern English. Can you find the now-archaic meaning with a good dictionary? In most cases yes, although some of those words have multiple archaic meanings, and you have to be discerning to be sure you pick the right one. And for that reason, if you’re going to use the KJV, I think there are a couple of really good editions that stand out for their usefulness:

—My favorite of the two is the Humble Lamb Lion. For each of those English words that mean something different today than they did 400 years ago (words for which many use the term “false friends”), the Lion gives today’s English word in a footnote right at the bottom of that page. Also, the Lion includes both The Epistle Dedicatory and The Translators to the Reader, which should be read by all KJV users; and its a beautiful, premium Bible befitting the respect due and the care we should take with God’s Word.

—The other is a bit older, although I believe it’s now back in print: The KJV Sword Study Bible. It has an even better mechanism for the “false friends” (imo anyway), which is that it gives today’s English word right there at the end of the verse where it occurs. The Sword also has a great deal of study material (which I’m not all that familiar with, so I can’t really comment on it), and a rare feature: not just the words of Christ in red, but all the words of God’s direct speech in red, OT and NT. The Sword’s lacking is that it has neither The Epistle Dedicatory nor The Translators to the Reader.

EDIT: I apologize, I completely forgot to say, THANK YOU so much for the video!! It’s very well-reasoned and thoughtful, and it’s food for prayer and thought for me!

To me, conviction is what has me sold on the KJV! God's word shows me every morning what I am, what I need to do, and how to do it. I have tried reading the others but just don't feel the same presence or realism as I do with the KJV. Your 5 points were great and on point... not for argument with others but shows me what I get out of reading the KJV (closeness) is what I don't get from the others. Your video was compelling and matches what I always think/feel, that I am reading the truth he has provided all of us!

Good info, just one thing that could use correction, and one thing that was ironic. The first is the slide with the implication that the NKJV deletes 16 verses. It does not. Yes, footnotes bring them in question, but it is left in the text. So saying they are omitted from the NKJV is not accurate.

The ironic part was that the outro ends with Bible verses that are not KJV.
