"too far to go back now" is the worst mindset when lost.

Riding into the desert until you run out of gas is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of

True heroes are the ones who set up the trailers in the middle of the desert with extra supplies, including water! These spots can save lives!

My worst fear is getting stuck in the desert. Those girls were lucky to make it out alive.

People think "it's a national park, there will be stores and restaurants"

I learned my lesson the hard way on a road trip through the wilds of northwest Maine one summer. I had for many years relied on my phone's mapping function to navigate. In this part of Maine, it was useless for lack of cell signal. I unexpectedly found my old and forgotten Garmin GPS device tucked down under the passenger seat and continued on my way. The first chance I got, I stopped at a small general store and bought a Maine road atlas. Paper often beats electronics hands down.

I worked in death valley for years at the badwater ultra marathon. and I remember when this happened. They had no water and no gas.
I would work for a weekend and I would drink about 2 gallons of water a day and never urinate in 72 hours. It all came out of my pores and never did make it to my bladder.
You better not screw up in death valley.
Death valley is no joke.

I have been to Death Valley several times (with a new rental truck with a full tank of gas, 2 cell phones from 2 different providers, and 3 gallons of water) I want to make sure that my voluntary choices do not result in my demise, or injury, or even the potential cost to the taxpayer (for the ridiculous amount of money needed to perform a rescue)

The freedom to do what I want comes with the freedom to be responsible.

Google maps have helped me countless times, but also gotten me into real trouble a couple of times. I've learned from it that if the road starts looking sketchy it's better to turn around and find an alternative route.

I flew to Las Vegas with a friend years ago, it was march and I had no idea how hot it would be. We had rented a car so we could go to the Grand Canyon and Death Valley. We went to Walmart and bought some summer clothes and while there I bought an ice chest, several gallons of water and a bunch of food. My friend was really tight with her money and didn’t see the need. I didn’t know if I would need it or not but I wasn’t going to venture out into the desert, which I know nothing about, without some bare minimum survival supplies. I also took warm clothes in the car even though it was 95 F in march and I had no clue Death Valey would be 115F the day we went. I also bought paper maps…… was it excessive, some would say yes, did we need all of it, no, but that $50 or whatever I spent was cheap insurance.
I always take too much and I always catch crap for it but everybody always comes to me when they need something !!!
I just don’t want to play the fools game with my life !!!!
