I appreciate that Amy is only incidentally making a feminist point in her cool girl monologue. She, like many of Gillian Flynn's other female characters, are spiteful and self-serving, but they do spark the larger conversation about the diverse ways in which women adapt to patriarchal constraints, especially as it ties into themes of autonomy and consent.

Grinning ear to ear when Amy Dunne is onscreen but also shaking my head so people don’t think I agree with her

nick's dad plays a bigger role in the book. they have a very strained relationship because his father was an alcoholic as well as an abusive misogynist. nick constantly reminds the reader that he's not like his father. he's better, he's a nice guy. the gag is that he's exactly like him, he's just too self-absorbed to realize it. whenever he's inconvenienced by a woman he's like "this is the part where my dad would call her a stupid bitch" and its like, sir you just did that in a less direct way

In the book, Nick's POV is littered with his barely contained misogyny. He's obsessed with being perceived as a good guy, but can't be bothered to actually BE a good guy. He has vicious misogynistic thoughts about almost every female character in the book - Amy, the detective, Amy's mom, his own mom, his mistress, Desi Collings' mom (who makes an uncomfortably sexual appearance, for some reason) and even Margot. He is constantly thinking about how annoying and stupid he finds them. He blames his "intrusive" misogynistic thoughts on his very misogynistic and now filterless ailing father, which is why the dad appears in the movie but isn't well utilized. At the beginning of the book, he resents Amy for holding him to a higher standard than he's willing to perform and blames her for his cheating. By the end of the book, he is so furious with her that he fantasizes about and considers actually murdering Amy, consequences be damned. I agree that Affleck's performance doesn't really sell the resentment and then seething anger that Nick has for her - it would have been more entertaining if for the first half of the film we were thinking "wait, did Nick actually kill her?" and for the second half of the film "wait, is Nick actually going to kill her?"

It makes so much sense for Mike to be talking about Gone Girl that I genuinely thought he already had a video on it. Some art was always meant to exist.

I don't know if you're talking about the movie specifically, but the story needs Nick to have sick parents because it shows that he has moved an intelligent, educated woman back to his hometown to look after his parents for him whilst he gets to live his dreams.

Punch and judy is a british seaside puppet show about domestic abuse, played for laughs.

30:15 I love that Amy is a woman who spent her entire life appealing to the male gaze, trying to be a male fantasy, and ended up with the guy of her dreams, only to find that it wouldn't make her happy and that he'd give up, stop being this dream guy, stop caring, and go cheat with a 20 smth student. She's obviously a villain, but she's also a sort of a woman's fantasy of female rage. Shes sick of catering to the male gaze, she doesn't care abt being good, she just wants revenge and freedom
