Top 10 Biggest Tiaras Ever Worn by a Royal!

In 1823, Parisian goldsmith Jean-Baptiste Fossin spent three years creating a 2.1-kilogram tiara containing 1,847 diamonds. Princess Sophie of Bavaria collapsed 68 minutes into her wedding ceremony, forcing attendants to remove the tiara with jeweler's tools. Her neck was left deeply marked. The incident pushed European jewelers toward lighter, hollowed designs. The Saxe-Coburg tiara was dismantled in 1828, its diamonds redistributed. Then Tsar Nicholas I went even further. His 1840 tiara weighed 3 pounds, 11 ounces and featured Siberian emeralds the size of quail eggs. Grand Duchess Ekaterina Mikhailovna wore it only three times. After the 1917 Revolution, inventory clerk Pyotr Kavelin smuggled it from Russia hidden beneath black bread in a bakery cart, eventually reaching Paris. Pittsburgh heiress Constance Whitmore bought it, wore it once, then had Cartier dismantle it into a necklace, bracelets, brooch and ring. In 1957, actress Merle Oberon appeared at the Academy Awards wearing a brooch containing three emeralds historians linked to the lost tiara. In 1876, Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II of Jaipur commissioned a 29.5-centimeter-tall tiara containing over 1,500 diamonds. Maharani Prithvi Kumari refused to wear it because its weight and height made the traditional namaste impossible. It was redesigned into a modular piece. After palace vaults were breached in 1911, it vanished. Sixty years later, a matching tiara appeared at Christie's. Despite a legal challenge, it sold for $2.8 million to collector Wilhelm von Hesse. Another royal rivalry began in 1854 when Prussia presented Princess Adelaide with a 487-gram tiara containing 47 Kashmir sapphires. She rejected it as an insult. The Austrian court later commissioned an even larger diamond tiara. Diplomatic relations deteriorated, and both pieces eventually disappeared during the chaos of World War II. One resurfaced in a Zurich vault in 1987 and secretly returned to Germany in 1989. The other has never been seen since 1945. Britain's largest royal tiara was created in 1911 for Queen Mary's Delhi Durbar using the Cullinan III and IV diamonds. She wore it repeatedly during imperial ceremonies, but after India's independence it disappeared from public use, becoming too closely associated with the Raj. The Noor-ol-Ain tiara, created in 1958 for Empress Farah of Iran, centers on a 60-carat pink diamond. After the 1979 revolution, Iran's crown jewels were reclassified as national assets. The tiara became part of the Central Bank's reserves and was later displayed briefly in Moscow before Iran banned future foreign exhibitions. Thailand's Great Crown of Victory rises 66 centimeters and weighs 7.3 kilograms, topped by the 545-carat Golden Jubilee Diamond. King Maha Vajiralongkorn wore it during his 2019 coronation for just 17 minutes. During World War II, the crown was hidden in a flooded temple chamber and later restored at enormous cost. Officials ultimately decided it was culturally irreplaceable and could not truly be insured. Royal tiaras have also entered the modern celebrity world. Rihanna wore the Duchess Amalie tiara to the 2019 Met Gala, generating millions of impressions and renewed interest in historic jewels. Auction prices surged afterward. Yet modern exposure has carried risks: in 2021, a 200-year-old Portuguese tiara was irreparably damaged during a photoshoot when its frame was forced onto a model's head. And then there is the Poltimore Tiara. Commissioned in 1870, it was later purchased by Princess Margaret, modified, and eventually sold at Christie's in 2006 for £926,400. Its original configuration was never recreated. These aren't simply crowns and jewels. Each tiara carries stories of royal power, political rivalry, revolution, war, theft, destruction—and the extraordinary lengths people went to protect, hide, or possess them.
