I can't wait for Legendary Axe 3 where a half naked lawyer using his guitar axe and guns to find items for a cake for his daughter's wedding.

When I was a kid I had an alien invasion story in my head about these two games...that an alien race had set up camp on a primitive earth, and their hi-tech nature had them falsely worshipped as gods (hence the whole cult of Jagu). By the time part 2 rolled around the godlike status of the aliens was wearing thin, but their technology was still used and exploited by both the aliens and the humans that aligned themselves with them.
That's how I connected the two games anyway. Who knows, I'm probably WAY off from the original intentions of the developers, but it made the games more enjoyable for me.
Great review! And you are 100% right about the music in part 2. Some of those tunes are favorites to this day!

Honestly, I didn't even know there was a sequel to this game until just now. Interesting. Legendary Axe, however, was a crucial game that pushed me into buying a TurboGrafx-16 after I already got the Sega Genesis several months before. The game was really cool and just felt great to play and I loved the music

Totally here for the dank atmosphere of LA2, its so foreboding and menacing. Never got on with the first game.

As a kid my friends and I talked a lot about the differences between these games- I played a lot more of LA II- I felt it was a more approachable and forgiving game, even if it was still quite challenging. I also felt like the Axe in the title made less sense because the sword was the best weapon in the game. I guess in my mind, Legendary Axe is more of a broader title where the games have little to nothing to do with each other, just similar themes. Kinda like American Horror Story's seasons being contained stories but thematically similar.

I feel in love with Legendary Axe when I first played it. It made me feel validated for being a TurboGrafx 16 kid. I loved the vibrant colors and the unique art style. I loved the awesome Charge Mechanic and how it added so much strategy. No other game felt like that before!!!
I love Legendary Axe 2 as well.
It's one of my favorite games!!!!!
But as a kid I felt a bit disappointed, from the things they cut from part-1 and it never really felt like a true sequel. When they took the Charge Mechanic away, they took some of the game's identity away.. I know most people say Legendary Axe 2 is the better game and maybe it is...? but part-1 has a special place in my heart and will always be the true Legendary Axe!!!🤩❤️👍

Legendary Axe is a pretty cool early game for the console, and yeah I like the overall Caveman fantasy setting. That charge metter and gameplay as you mentioned was carried from Astyanax, both games were directed and designed by the same guy. There was also a cancelled Mega Drive game called "Vasum" that he was working on and based on the few screenshots that exist it had similar gameplay as his other 2 games but with some RPG elements to it.
For me Ankoku Densetsu is the one I play the most. It feels right in every way.

Played the hell out of both of these games as a kid. The ending for Legendary Axe 2 surprised me when I first beat it.
