Call me strange but I really liked the combat in The Witcher when it first appeared. It was different from what it was done before and it was fun to switch stances to handle different types of enemies.

Hey, as a Pole, I appreciate you spelling "CD Projekt" the way you do. It's a nice touch.

The detective quest - in which you interrogate the suspects and perform autopsy - was very impressive because you could make a fatal mistake and kill albeit not innocent, but a wrong man nonetheless. The whole quest could feel really clunky at times, but it made you feel actually smart and investigative if you figured things out - or dumb and regretful if you've fallen for villain's scheme. It could never be achieved if truth would have been presented as one of the "multiple choice" answers without doing the legwork first OR if player was locked into doing the investigation in a linear fashion. Both correct solution and failure lead to the same results, sure, but evoked very different emotions. More game designers should try to allow player to fail without triggering the "fail state". Victory feels meaningless if it is the only option to progress.

Despite all of its problems, this is one of my favorite games of all time. I played trough it several times and it was always very enjoyable. I played it last time before I started the Witcher 3 and played the second part also.
I think the atmosphere CDP created is what can drag you in, amongst several other things you mentioned.
Great review, btw!
