흙과 태양이 없어도 농사 지을 수 있다? 빌딩, 사막, 심지어 우주에서도 농사를 짓는 차세대 산업 '식물공장' [KBS 20180504 방송]

■ Covering AeroFarm, the World's Largest Plant Factory AeroFarm, the world's largest plant factory, utilizes a spray cultivation method that directly supplies water and nutrients to the roots. Although cultivation takes place without sunlight or soil, it saves approximately 95% of water compared to outdoor growing and boasts a production yield 130 times higher. Israel has also achieved agricultural development in its narrow and barren desert land by utilizing advanced technology. It became an advanced agricultural nation by developing drip irrigation, which continuously supplies small amounts of water to specific, limited areas. A plant factory in the Netherlands cultivates tulip bulbs using an automated system and handles the entire process from cultivation to shipment. Special X-ray equipment is used to trim the tulips to the appropriate length. Through these efforts, costs have been reduced, and the country has become a powerhouse in the flower export market. ■ The Evolution of Plant Factories The United States is also actively researching plant factories to be built on Mars and the Moon. The production team conducted an exclusive interview with the Arizona Space Agriculture Research Center, a model for future space plant factories. One plant factory in the United States is located close to an urban area, sending harvested vegetables directly to supermarkets. By reducing the distance to consumers, we provide customers with healthy food free from pesticides and genetic modifications. In Japan, restaurants have emerged that create salads using vegetables harvested from plant factories located on the lower floors. Plant factories, once hailed as a "future industry," now exist close to us like neighbors, becoming a future food industry that improves the quality of life. One domestic company has successfully cultivated ginseng using a spray method in a plant factory, advancing the harvest time by up to four times compared to field production, and is now supplying ginseng as a raw material for cosmetics. Plant factories are not only a next-generation industry; the survival and future of humanity depend on them. ※ This video is [KBS Special - Plant Factory], aired on May 4, 2018.
