  Our session -1 was character creation, and i asked each player to also make a goblin character for a one-shot. Session 0, the players played as their goblin characters and raided/burned an innocent town. Some of them were even killed!<br><br>Session 1, i dropped their real PCs into the tail-end of the raid, affected by the choices they themselves made as goblins.

  Had a regular tavern open, but all of the players were given a note about them being a part of a prophecy (or what a cult of kuo-Toa believes to be a prophecy)

  “Define what is wrong with the tavern”<br><br>I’m instantly brought back to the first game I saw NateWantsToBattle run in which he stated, as part of his (I suspect purposefully) dry opening narration, “One interesting thing about this tavern is that it is… on fire.”

  Used a tavern start couple of times &quot;You find yourself in a tavern. It&apos;s destroyed. Tell me how did it happened.&quot; and &quot;You are in a tavern, it is yours. And a couple of ruffian-looking men just entered and shouted to a patron they&apos;re here to collect his bounty&quot;

  My current game started with a wizened old divination wizard sending the whole party a summons with the seal of a high academic institution. But when they got there instead of having to listen to a directive, powerful figure that commanded respect, the wizard was more feeble, and in need of their help than he would have been in his prime. Somewhat of a mix of the patron / royal seal intros.

  I had a pretty good ‘you wake up in jail’ start to a game this year. We opened to the Warlock and Rogue being pulled out of jail by the Paladin on the release condition that we accompany her on a quest, the local government having decided that keeping us locked up was getting too expensive after all the locks we’d broken. Instant connection between party members, natural dynamic of her desperately trying to keep us in line, and a damn good reason for us to listen to her if we want to stay out of jail. Worked like a charm.

  You could have the characters be summoned by the Queen or King and have the ruling monarch talk down to them and tell them to destroy a group of lawless bandits trying to overthrow the order, and then have the &quot;lawless bandits&quot; turn out as insurgents fighting against the tyrannical monarch, where they are given more and more hints that the King or Queen is an absolute tyrant and that this resistance is a force for good, like anarchy or even the at least marginally better democracy.
