There is also ONE greek actor Yannis Kokiasmenos - Old Man at Coastal Village. <br>Can I take it you noticed the ultimate act of irony: having left the beach at Troy, Odysseus chooses to sail along the coast to "go shopping for supplies". <br>They try to raid a village and before they can the villagers burn the village down. <br>Himesh Patel (Eurylochus) speaking to the villager: "Ask him why they abandoned their village instead of welcoming us."<br>Jovan Adepo (Elpinor) speaking in a "foreign language" asks the villager the question who answers speaking in the same "foreign language" <br>and then says to Eurylochus "They said they thought we were the sea people."<br>Eurylochus responds : "No." ( or NOOOOOOO)<br>Then the line of lines is delivered by the very clearly subcontinental indian "We're Greeks from Ithaca. Maybe you heard our victory at Troy. We're headed west on the southerly winds."<br>WELL WELL WELL - a current day GREEK commentator said "the foreign language" was GREEK !!!!!! The lines are delivered by a Gujarati Indian and a Nigerian-American who claim to be GREEKS -- when Greece did not exist for at least a thousand years and they would have called themselves Mycenaeans (often called Achaeans by Homer). AND if my geography was correct - the village was in modern day Turkey (or lands that used to be in Turkey) and of all the insults to Greece that is fairly high up there.

Emily Wilson poked her head out long enough to declare this movie incoherent, completely missing the key themes, and left her wondering what the basis for the relationship between Fraudysseus and Penelope even was.

Nolan's "adaptation" is an exercise in the art of taking entirely for granted something pregnant w meaning and relevance. It's the turning to foundational cultural bedrock and declaring, "Whatever." It's "Stairway to Heaven" used in an ad for Doritos. It's the tearing down of the Colosseum to construct the Colosseum Casino Night Club. It's the secular version of sacrilege, iconoclasm just for the spectacle, selling one's soul to the Devil in exchange for an "And All I Got Was This Lousy T-shirt" T-shirt. It's Shakespeare presented as a circus act, a company HR training video. It was the kind of thing one does purely because one's rich, belligerent, cynical, nihilistic, and wants to demonstrate what conspicuous they can get away with. And Nolan would never have even considered applying this treatment to the Gilgamesh.<br><br>The only equivalent I can recall in recent history is Ubisoft's game "Assassin's Creed: Shadows" which besmirched real Japanese history so much that the Japanese Parliament was making policy about it. When it became clear that they'd literally let players experience the game as a black samurai while desecrating sacred Japanese shrines, the uproar from Japan got Ubisoft to patch in the shrines as indestructible... Not going to be an "oops" patch that Nolan can provide that would make it up to Greece... or Western civilization...

I watched the Red Letter Media review and I noticed that Mike and Jay mentioned they LOVED this film up front. Acted like they did not get the controversy around it.<br><br>Then spent the rest of the video talking about the all-star cast, how subtle the CGI was, and kept speculating how ambitious and challenging a 100% IMAX production must have been to pull off.<br><br>They never talked about what makes this movie itself supposedly so amazing.<br><br>It all felt a bit like they were beating around the bush.

There is one thing that annoys me more than anything else in this film. Odysseus and Penelope are supposed to be clever, that's one of the main things that connects them. There are countless great warriors and beautiful maids, but few are as clever as that pair. Now I want to make it clear that clever doesn't mean "smart" necessarily, Odysseus does plenty of "dumb" things throughout his Odyssey. Time after time Penelope and Odysseus use their wits and cleverness to beat the odds overcoming obstacles that less inventive minds would fall before. How Nolan could think that portraying characters without one of their primary character traits was acceptable is truly baffling. He removed basically every moment from the original the exemplified Odysseus' wit. I thought they would at least keep in the sirens to make some point about "hur dur horny sexist men" but no. Why even do the "adaptation" at that point when your so committed to keeping the character from the page off of the screen? For the Marvel brained among us, it's like making an Iron Man film and portraying Tony as an arrogant and charismatic playboy without any of his genius intellect and moral convictions to back it up. Making a Captain America movie were Steve is just some gung ho muscle head with none of his good nature or principles. You're just not adapting the damn work at that point. It really does feel like an ego thing, like Nolan did it to prove he could to all the "right people".

Imagine being Greek and your fellow Greeks telling you that "it's a good movie" or "I saw Odysseus as I knew him" only to tell them all the wrongs of the film and then getting a response like "that's just Nolan's perspective" or "that's just your opinion".

Nolan did not bring The Odyssey to screen, nor Odysseus. He brought the antithesis. A Fraudyssey, with his original character, the miserable, moronic avatar of human incompetence and despair, Fraudysseus.

That's the beauty of this, the hubris of a superior man losing all respect for "his" art for the sake of a pointless point, "But we want to be on the right side of history", and the classic "We want to be right". It will only ever be remembered for it's apathy.
