  Alexander Bogachev (1955–2015), passed away after a prolonged illness around 11 years after this Documentary. However, he still holds the record for the number of ballistic missile launch tests under his command at 58 and nearly as many as a young XO. Another Documentary has him in 1996 as a younger XO aboard the same boat doing the same exercise run they always routinely did at roughly 22-28 days out. He knew he was watched and flanked by LA Class boats nearly every time. Its known that after his well documented launches under the ice he could shake our boats loose and disappear until our satellites would catch his boat arriving in port. This technique of being "loud and proud" to the launch zone so that all the world seen the power then going silent and disappeared back home since its 1981 launch is likely what inspired the movie "Red October". His dedication to the fleet likely cost him marriage. Wasn't much to the life of these dedicated men at Senior Command levels. From all stories I have read about him after his marriage he was happier "out at sea than rotten away on land." Legend in his own right. Highly Respected on both sides of the Atlantic.

  My father was a career US Navy submariner. Despite being "adversaries" my father always spoke respectfully of Russian submarine crews. He believed that all submariners shared a bond regardless of the flag they sailed under. The homecomings were no different than when my father returned home. Joy, sorrow and loneliness but always ready to return to duty and their bond nobody but a fellow submariner could understand.

  When I was in the Navy our primary focus was to hunt this class of subs. We were able to track Alpha class ships but we never were able to find any Typhoon class ships. My ship was part of Destroyer squadron 13.
