This was back in the 70’s when the Mafia was at its biggest peak.
Richard was the top comedian in the world along with Carlin and a few others.

He was friends with some Mafia people and they knew he was a comedian so they would just laugh at this stuff. They wouldn’t get mad at him.

Richard Pryor always turned his life story into comedy. He's not making it up. He lived a crazy life.

Ritchie is from my hometown of Peoria, Illinois. He grew up in a brothel run by his grandma and his father was head of security. Richard's mama was a prostitute, but his grandma was the one who raised him. Richard was the first black entertainer to introduce the black perspective to white America in a way that wasn't polished to make white folks feel comfortable regarding race relations. He was basically NWA before rap music. He is considered the most influential comic in U.S. history.

Richard's hometown was a hub for both the Mafia and The Irish Mob. Both had a presence there up through at least the late 1990's. Richard's special took place after the popularity of The Godfather put the Mafia into the American collective conscience. So, by that time the cat was out of the bag and speaking on its existence was no longer a threat to them. That ship had sailed, there was no more mystique surrounding the organization. Therefore, with a few name changes most likely, Richard could easily tell that story without putting himself in danger.

My maternal grandparents were born shortly after their parents immigrated to the U.S. from Italy. The gibberish words that Richard Pryor was saying really do sound like the southern Italian I grew up hearing.

As I understand it, the Mafia was not triggered by these things. They were very quiet about their business, and they didn't try to stand out among regular people. And as Richard stated, his father was the baddest man that he knew. Black people, in general, had many enemies, so the mafia meant nothing to us.

I grew up in a majority Italian neighborhood. An Italian kid one year younger than me decided he'd make his "bones" by fighting me, the toughest kid in my grade, a grade above his. I knew I could beat him, but I also knew he had 3 older brothers, one in jail. If I beat him, and I knew I could, my "prize" would be fighting his older brother, who'd destroy me. In the end, me and my buddy ended up stealing for them. They'd buy stolen goods from us at massive discounts, sell for massive profits.
Welcome to the Mafia

A black man saying " mutha fka" is not taken negatively. It's just part of their normal conversation. It's not a put down, by any means.

A friend of mine gave me all of his Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy cassette tapes when his oldest daughter found them and was dropping F bombs at the breakfast table, LOL! My favorite Richard Pryor joke was called When Your Woman Leaves You! Hilarious!

I'm from Cleveland, Ohio. The mafia was HUGE in Youngstown back in the day and to a certain extent Cleveland, but it was held at bay there, from the Elliot Ness days...
