In the middle of a concert.

CONDUCTOR: Stop the show! Stop the show.

Audience is confused, as are the musicians, although they try to hide it.

CONDUCTOR: There is something I'd like to announce.

Muffled murmurs are heard throughout the audience, in the background, the dialogue "Couldn't you have done this before the piece" is audible. Backstage crew appear and set up a projector.

CONDUCTOR: Have you ever needed to send a really important email?

Audience boos, because the piece they were listening to was interrupted by a fucking advertisement. Ratings decrease dramatically from that point on.

I always enjoy going to classic rock concerts and yelling, "Play Firebird!" toward the end of the show.

Harp harmonics doubling clarinets around 43:30 - wow! Stravinsky is always good for an orchestration lesson.

I first heard this piece when I was 12. It was this recording and this video. It was like nothing I've ever heard before. The harmonic glissandos, the crazy orchestration, the ingenious harmonies, the xylophone solos, and the finale with it's beautiful melody and crashing bass drum hits enthralled me. Aside from Petrushka and the Rite of Spring, (both of which I listened to about a week earlier) this was probably one of the the first famous pieces from the modern era that I heard end to end, and it opened up a world of Bartòk, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich (who is now my favorite composer). This was also one of the first pieces that got me interested in composing, yet every time I return I feel smaller and smaller. Someday I hope to achieve something even half as great as this.

The Firebird Suite uses one of my favorite musical tricks, which unfortunately this version doesn't have.

I saw this with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra when I was 11; we were playing a very dumbed down version of the finale in band at the time. It was late for me, and while I was enjoying the performance, I was really tired and was mainly just waiting for the part that I recognized. The music was slow in this particular section, and while I wasn't asleep I wasn't quite awake either. So now the phrase ends on a quiet, peaceful whole note. How relaxing... and then BAM! 33:01 happened and I nearly jumped out of my seat. Yeah, that'll teach me to fall asleep during a symphony...
