It is wild to think about how much knowledge we traded for modern convenience. The fact that the earth acts as a thermal battery is something we should still be utilizing today! 🤯

There is a dugout that still exists today. Along the Missouri River in Montana,, east of Judith Landing,, and just a bit east Of Council Island , south bank just behind the riverside poplar trees and brush. It was still there last time I saw it in 2014. And the story teller has under estimated the temperatures in the mountains and the snow fall in rare years. Wyoming has seen 12 and 14 feet from a single storm. High Rockies in Colorado I have seen -60 F estimated (Mercury thermometers cease to function below -40) (top of Big Burn, Snowmass at Aspen 1971 or 1972) -40F is common. As stated in the story -30F and 2 or 3 feet of snow has been common in the last 60 years or so. (except this year.)
A buffalo robe does not rival modern fabrics it is 10 times better. Buffalo wool socks, made from the soft under coat of a buffalo,, the real fluffy stuff that is shed each spring, are incredible in winter and amazingly comfortable in summer heat. Ask someone who has spent a continuous month outside in Wyoming and Utah at elevations between 4k and 7k above sea level. Me.

Obviously the author of this video had never lived in a long house.. well zi I live off grid in Denali Alaska. I built this house Myself using 8 inch square milled logs. I am not a carpenter and I made a few mistakes. Its not large 16x 20 feet with a loft bedroom. I chicken between the logs. And used Ollie screws to pull logs together. I used wood heat. And at 66 below zero its warm. I am off grid. If I need power I run a generator. A Honda 2200 i. Its small enough that even at my advanced age, which is 82, that i can carry it. I dont know the weight im guessing 50 pounds. Thats important, because I keep it in house to keep it warm until I need it.then I carry it out to a center agent shed. When temps drop to 20 below and colder it will not start if left outside. My cabin is Not drafty and cold. I ude a steel, cast iron and soapstone woodstove. But i also have a gravity feed fuel oil toyo stove. Sadly, I musr run generator to use it. As its electronic fuel injected. Living off grid is not easy... However I knew this when I started, the work load never ends. NEVER.. I am not married, but I have two Huskies and we are all happy. My dogs are free as birds, yet they stay home. If ANYONE has questions please feel free to ask, and I will answer honestly.
I am a Navy veteran with 8 years service, and I chose this life because ive seen and done much in those years. I felt i needed a peaceful life in my elder years. If you ask questions concerning my military years, I will not reply, I will answer anything concerning my off grid life though. Stay safe, and love life, many cannot..

This video tells alot of untruths. Beaver trapping ran throughout winter. Pelts were better. I've done it. Mountain men used cabins.
