Memes aside, hearing the word "nostalgic" used to describe Hoovydundy was a gut punch. I always look back at the earlier GMod animations that were nostalgic to me and thought my stuff was far below that. I never thought something I made would do the same for someone else.
Appreciating the past, but focusing on making new memories is the moral of this video to me.

Okay, back to memes: BABE, PAUSE THE SUPERBOWL, THEY DID A VIDEO ESSAY ON MY GMOD ANIMATION

Heavydundy in TF2 has always been a strange case to me.

Fr tho the video is as peak as all the direct glimpses into production we got promised it'd be. Seeing it put together like this, I think this is genuinely better than most current 'media analysis' content on Youtube, both in terms of presentation, pacing and analysis. Glad we got to lend a little help!
Also I cannot watch back my horrid narration without cringing 💀Also there's no way all three of us basically did the same bit for our opinion pieces 💀
Also also there's no way the overtime man literally said "I know it's like a scary heavy" 💀💀💀

 > Starts by mentioning TF2 Freaks

Oh, this is gonna be nostalgic.

EDIT: Also, I do know ONE TF2 Freak video that came before HoovyDundy which seemed to place a much greater emphasis on horror. It was a Painis Cupcake video in SFM by Kostomianen.

EDIT 2: This is the one: https://youtu.be/vihUNZRQjBs

This one feels like a weird hybrid of the wacky, old Freak videos and the formula that would eventually be nailed down by HoovyDundy. Painis isn’t portrayed as a goofy haha with some menace, his mere announcement causes the characters to react with dread, and him devouring the Soldier and murdering the Medic are clearly meant to be macabre moments. Hell, the way he goes after the Soldier is entirely devoid of humor - instead of his classic and comedic “sliding across the ground with shotgun clicking noises” movement, he’s climbing across the 2Fort boundary fence like an animal.

Heck, the way he’s introduced makes him look… Off. Due to the camera angle (I think), his eyes seem bugged out/bigger and his mouth looks much larger than it normally is. This is the thumbnail of the video, in fact.

The music in the background is also notable. It’s not the original versions of the DKC 64 songs associated with him but orchestral covers of those songs, which give the entire video a greater sense of scale and intensity.

Finally, though, is/was the wallpaper I remember Kosta put in the description of the video. It’s a frame of Painis climbing across the 2Fort boundary fence while a rocket explodes behind him, with a hungry grin on his face and him looking directly at the viewer. That’s not a funny image, it’s an unsettling one.

Looking back on it, it’s such a strange case (yeah I had to), because it’s almost like this… Prototype of TF2 horror. It still has some slight moments of humor (Painis PUNCHES A GUY’S HEAD OFF and rocket jumps), but it’s primarily a horror story. It’s… Really curious.

I’m sure there are other videos from before this one that had the same style, but this version of Painis is the one I remember most.

EDIT 3: Good video. Succinct and informative. Sorry for the old man ramblings.
