Owning a home is a low goal but many people in America are struggling to meet even that lowly goal. What does this say about American society?

Owing a home = security. People want that if they want a family

Housing should never be an investment. But that said, owning a home does keep equity and many high income areas have high rent. So it makes sense to own just based on that. I never considered property ownership as an investment. It's a place to live for people that are family oriented and build equity, that's it.

Right, being a commercial landlord is a whole ‘nother job and an investment which if bungled can end in a mess

    27:20

You are the first person to talk about this, this really was what happened to me in my church. It's the one i grew up going to, but we didn't always go weekly. Now we go almost every Sunday, and even the presence of a young couple soon to be married there lifts their spirits, they want to help. If you show up for others, they'll show up for you, and it will really surprise you how much others want to care. It puts my heart at ease honestly.

I want a house primarily so I can have a garage to work on old cars and pursue my other hobbies. If I could have a two car garage with a studio apartment on the 2nd floor, I think that would be my ideal house. It would also need a real wood burning fireplace... None of this natural gas nonsense.

I don't know if people are actually thinking when they say that the big goal is to own a house. When a regular person says "own a house", they want the archetype of home ownership - chiefly security, financial safety, self reliance and what they view as a ladder to wealth. When you dive into it - would you rather own a home or have the value of that home in cash, most people would chose the cash, because it was never about the home. It's about what the home represents. I don't know if you cover this later in the video, but thanks for the thoughts as always.
