Gotta love how AI decided it was appropriate for the blacksmith to be forging a dice cube when it was talking about mint dies.

When the stock exchange came about, the “shares of stock” were listed in fractions of a dollar…1/4, 1/8, and so forth…a nod to the Spanish dollar….prices of eight. Arrrg me hardies!

That was back in the day when gold and silver were directly in the hands of traders around the world. It just sucks that all we have now are inexpensive metal coins with only figures minted on them, which will no longer be of any value once you get out of the country.

This was such a fascinating watch! I never realized that the 'pieces of eight' from pirate movies were actually the world's first global currency. It’s crazy to see how it shaped the modern US dollar and even where the '$' sign likely came from. A really eye-opening look at how this silver built our world, even with such a dark and bloody history behind it.

5:48 not many people know this but if you remove the crown and combine the two pillars and the cloth, that’s how we got the $ sign!

Pieces of eigth. The first global currency. It was a masterpiece of metalurgy at that time in s. XVI. It was still use around the globe until s. XIX.
