  This is the year I was born, and Rhodesia was on its way out. I lived through the post-Independence exuberance and optimism, and watched it curdle into disillusionment and then everything slid towards the precipice. Today, I live in the UK.

  Rhodesia showed the world what Africa could be.  Zimbabwe showed the world what Africa is.

  Perhaps the best Rhodesia documentary because it gives a better cross sectional view of the whole society than any of the others I have seen.

  I love the order around African men, they are neat and wearing suits even when they drink umqombothi, discipline, and neatness were the order of the day, and this makes me wonder about the way we conduct ourselves as Africans in our time.

  "You now have the bread basket of Africa". That was what Kaunda of Zambia described Rhodesia then to Mugabe when he became president. Now it is the basket case of Africa. It could have been so different had Mugabe used his head and worked with Smith on a structured hand over of government control, involving training and mentoring of new incumbents into positiins of authority and responsibility. It is what Smith offered at the time and what was rejected outright by Mugabe.
