I don&apos;t understand it. Effectively a really expensive piece of infrastructure is reduced from 3 to 2 lanes thanks to them.

  I had a BX19RD non turbo diesel back in the day. It trundled along at 80mph, was superbly comfie and indeead was very light so was very frugal. <br>It had enough quirks to make it French.

  Ahh, the M27. I&apos;ve lived in Northern France for nearly 4 years now, and every time I come back to visit family and get on to the M27, I get this weird mixed feeling of nostalgia and insta-rage 😂

  Absolutely spot on. I found 135mph was fast enough tearing up the M1 in about 1999 chasing a Porsche. The appreciative thumbs up I got from him when he turned off was justification.

  I think you put a finger on one of the obsessions of car engineering of that era: the chase of the optimal gear to reach the highest possible speed. To do so, they had to match exactly the top possible speed with the engine revving exactly at max power (6500 for the 16v). Now, suppose top speed is 135 MPH, the revs at 67.5 (half) will be 3250. With a taller gear you save fuel, have more relaxed driving and less noise, but you won&apos;t reach top speed anymore. But this is not a problem nowadays with speed cameras everywhere, the &apos;90 were a different world. <br><br>If you want to lower RPM without changing the rev drop between gears, you could see if it is possible to change the final drive ratio instead. You&apos;ll get all gears taller. Of course, with the max torque at 4800 RPM and a long first gear, the clutch will suffer at every uphill start.

  Thinking about doing the same to my 19 TZI Break (with the 120 hp GTi drivetrain). &nbsp;In the 80s, VW had what they called “4+E” gearboxes with a very long 5th to save fuel. &nbsp;I liked the concept, so there ... :-)

  Owned a BX 19TGD in the early 90s, not the quickest of the mark but very good once on the move, quiet, comfortable &amp; very relaxing to drive , never had any issues , lovely motor, great channel, unique presentation, brilliant 👏
