Herbie Hancock funk and Chick Corea fusion were my entry way into jazz over 50 years ago. Then I listened to other people in their other bands, then still others. I'm still listening and playing today.

Art Blakey and the jazz messengers: you forgot to mention Lee Morgan and Benny Golson, two of the greats. These are the horn players playing in the clip.

Every jam mentioned I have in my library. I recall hearing Blood Sweat and Tears and admiring their horns, but after their first album in 69, there were two other horn driven groups. Chicago and Tower of Power challenged BST, and in my opinion was a major factor in their demise; both groups toured into 2023, and The Tower is still on the road.
I thought Led Zeppelin was loud, they were mild compared to Mahavishnu Orchestra. Cobham's Fibes drums sounded like thunder. The use of synthesizers on the string instruments really caused us to pay attention to which player that might be soloing.
In my humble opinion, the Fusion era produced the most prolific instrumentalist and hypnotic music ever. In a turn around in the jazz world, musicians were now spiritually led instead of being strung out on scag. Heroin claimed the lives of so many jazz musicians either by over dose, jail terms, or lingering illnesses. Gene Ammons' album cover "The Boss Is Back," has him departing an airplane, which rumor has it that he's arriving from Lexington. Anyone who knows jazz is aware that Ammons was an old school musician, and their way into the deep place within theirselves was via dope. The young boys that hit the bandstand were meditating or into Scientology.

The Chick Corea video you have is not of the classic Return to Forever line up but is the much more recent Electric Group. Also “Corea” is pronounced like the country Korea.

I especially hated when Miles turned his back on Jazz and started playing what I considered garbage. And to make matters worse he was receiving rave reviews. I thought jazz columnists were losing their mind. But I said to myself, this is just a phase, he’ll put away this nonsense soon and get back to business, but he never did. It seemed like myself and Wynton Marsalis were the only ones not okay with what was going on with Jazz.
