  Theres absolutely no marine referencing at all anymore. These new characters barely look like fish, and even the backgrounds don’t give me that same vibe anymore. Everything just seems to be on land now.

  It&apos;s just a shame how much the show changed. The ocean elements feel nonexistent, the small nuances the characters had are completely gone, and that down to earth vibe is replaced with nonsense.<br><br>Also my problem with modern SpongeBob is my problem with all kids media. The cocomelon effect. A kids show has to constantly move and be ridiculous to keep children&apos;s eyes on the screen. That&apos;s why the animation is so ridiculous now, they don&apos;t really care about quality. They just don&apos;t want you to look away. Even though old SpongeBob also had some ridiculous moments, it didn&apos;t feel like multiple cuts back to back.

  What bothers me the most in modern episodes is that not a single one of these characters can just stand still and talk normal for 5 seconds. And i do literally mean 5 seconds, i tried with multiple episodes. They always have to do a silly pose, stretch, bounce, bend, pull a weird face, yell and stuff like that. Constantly jingling keys and at some point it just gets annoying. I honestly dont even care about the plot or character changes or anything elses like that. Its just this constant moving that bothers me.<br><br>Someone said it best and its the the most accurate way to explain modern spongebob, every frame looks like they are trying to make a meme out of.

  The wacky face visuals makes me hate it. It&apos;s like they saw the internet memes and said &quot;yeah, lets do more of that&quot;. It just ruins the characters for me. Watching grumpy ole squidward look like a complete clown defeats the purpose of his entire character.

  Quick answer: Yeah. Kinda. We have seen that the writing of SpongeBob is much weaker so the animation is “picking up the slack” .

  To be honest, the abundance of super wacky animations in Modern SpongeBob has just never really jibed with me, regardless if any of it has thematic ties to the narrative of a given episode, and this is something that I myself would learn firsthand.<br><br>See, I took an art class when I was in high school, and we were once tasked to design a cover for our art books. It could have been anything we wanted, but I remember I went out of my way to create the most crazy and extravagant cover possible, with all sorts of different colors and patterns clashing together with no cohesion whatsoever. My teacher was super critical of it, saying that it was needlessly messy and overdesigned. I always thought he was such a jerk for saying that, but looking back on it, and especially after seeing how over-animated Modern SpongeBob can be? I have to admit... he kinda had a point. <br> <br>Sure, art is all about finding your own creativity, and you can absolutely make a piece of art that&apos;s a bit more &quot;out there&quot; and surreal. However, there is such a thing as overexaggerating something to the point where it just feels forced, and not necessary either. I think that&apos;s what my teacher was trying to tell me back then, and it&apos;s what I would say to the Modern SpongeBob animators. I get that they probably just want their characters and animation to be as expressive as possible, but most of the time, it just feels like they&apos;re trying way too hard to remind us that SpongeBob is a wacky cartoon, when they really don&apos;t need to honestly. SpongeBob has always been a wacky cartoon and exaggerated facial expressions have been there since the beginning, but it felt a lot more restrained back then and wasn&apos;t so overbearing and &quot;in your face&quot; as it is now. <br> <br>I know this is very subjective, but personally, I&apos;ve come to realize that there&apos;s actually an inherent appeal to restrained simplicity in art, and SpongeBob understood this in its earlier seasons with the animation. Whereas nowadays, the abundance of overexaggerated animations and facial expressions just come off as desperate attempts to be goofy and cartoonish for the sake of it seemingly, with no real artistic merit behind it all aside from a few exceptions.<br><br>This all really does remind me of that crazy art book cover I made back in school. Was I really being creative with it? Or was I trying to make it weird and over-the-top just because I could?

  The premise of the first episode sounds incredibly interesting. Honestly, it sounds like something pre-movie SpongeBob might have done.

  Honestly the main reason I saw the exaggerated faces as a bad thing in modern Spongebob is because a character being off-model should really be used to heighten the comedy of a particular situation, and the show often does much more than it needs to.<br><br>We find the realistic shot of Squidward in <i>Just One Bite</i> funny because it amplifies Squidward&apos;s line seconds earlier where he says &quot;Does this look unsure to you?&quot; It&apos;d arguably be less funny if it was just Squidward&apos;s regular face. Even then, ONLY Squidward&apos;s face is shown, not his whole body. <br><br>For example, the two shots starting at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lu3a4BK55BY&amp;t=757">12:37</a>, in context, has Mr. Krab&apos;s claw act like a dog sniffing out the nickel, and him treating it like one. That on its own could be very funny, but in both shots, Krabs&apos; entire body is off-model. Off-model shots are humorous because of the contrast it creates, but because his arm is as off-model as he is, the humor of the arm acting like a dog is lessened. It still exists, but it&apos;s not as strong as it could be.<br>Imagine the scene but with Krabs as he usually looks and only his arm (particularly the claw) going off-model to resemble a dog, and the humor of the situation is heightened. Add a few camera tricks, maybe a close up shot where most of the arm is off-screen and only his and the &apos;dog&apos;s&apos; heads or on screen as he pets it, and boom, the scene is easily much funnier.<br><br>Modern Spongebob fails when it comes to using off-model character because more often than not, them being off-model IS the joke itself, not to boost up an already humorous situation. <br>Remember that for <i>Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog,</i> animators were specifically told by the character designers to purposely draw Dr. Robotnik off-model if it would make a scene funnier, and his character is beloved because of the humor he brought to the show.<br><br>Exaggeration is only funny when it causes contrast. Make everything exaggerated, and suddenly nothing is.
