Living alone use small amounts of leftover meat to make pies. A tin of mushroom or oxtail soup frozen in ice cube trays means you always have gravy to go in with the meat.

At 81 I am now re educating my self. I already knew most of these tips and practiced them when the family lived at home. Now times are hard again I enjoy out smarting the super markets. Thank you Nan Margaret for reminding me of how I managed years ago.

Hey Margaret, I like to make a vegan version of bread and butter pudding. I also split the bread and keep some in the box and some in the freezer. Draft excluders and putting on extra layers make so much sense. I much prefer to repair clothes as well and it amazes me how so many people are prepared to throw something away just because it has a hole in it. It's not as though the thing is full of holes! I've never had a tumble dryer or a dishwasher. Although I use the washing machine for most things, I will still hand wash some things, but this is something people so rarely do now. I had my great nan show me how before I went to college, because I would be staying at a place with shared laundry. How about keeping appliances clean? I can't get to the filter on my washing machine which is annoying, but cleaning it makes not only the machine but the clothes last longer. Cleaning the toaster and hob and oven etc also makes them last longer because of course, you don't have the dirt getting in the way.

Oh I also put a small amount of water in the bottom of hand soap bottle. I've started making my own dish soap this year, so that's saved me about 4.50 every couple of months. I clean the counters and all the other surfaces with water and vinegar as well. When I'm deep-frying something, I keep the oil and deep-fry something else. So I'll make a couple of lots of carrot and onion bhajis and then some cubes of tofu to put in another dish.

I remember most of what you have shown in this video. The dripping bowl especially, Dripping sandwiches. I am in my 70's and now I am Vegan, so no meat or animal products in our house. One thing though, when my children were growing up, I would use porridge oats to stretch mince. One or two tablespoons in a pound of mince..........no one ever noticed. Nowadays I use Vegan mince, and there is plenty for me and my husband, so I don't need the oats for that now. I make vegetable soups/stews and add dumplings made with vegetable suet. Easy, cheap and nourishing.

Things that were common sence are now replaced by convenience. They don't want to have the knowledge of how to save and stretch food. Its extra work.
But
They don't eat as healthily as we did back then, and when they age, they will see the difference.

Bicarbonate of soda is what I use for making the dish soap and I'm thinking to use it to try making some stain remover. Someone told me a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and lemon juice works great for most things.
