Monster's anime has 74 episodes total, which comes out to about thirty hours minimum to finish the series. Johan, in all thirty hours, only has 30 or so minutes of screen time. And yet his presence is felt in every corner and shadow of the series. He is truly like a ghost, but very real. What makes Johan so effective is not how evil he is, but rather how he perfectly embodies the very concept of nihilism. Johan is a true Monster, but his story poses the age old question of nature versus nurture. It's left ambiguous whether Johan was born evil or made evil by his past, but Johan perfectly explores the idea of who the true monster is, and how it might just be living inside everyone.

But despite this, Monster is actually a story about hope and the beauty of humanity. Johan exists because you can't see the good in life without seeing it at its worst. That's why Dr. Tenma is one of anime's greatest protagonists. He alone has the hope in humanity to fight against Johan's nihilism. Johan believes death is the only equalizer, while Tenma believes life is the most precious thing to ever exist.

He is definitely on my podium, but I can't take Griffith from Berserk out of first place.

Griffith has so much charisma, and it's kind of scary. I love Guts, but you can ask anyone who has read the manga: no matter how much you love Guts, when Griffith is on the page, you are completely captivated by him.

Monster is one of my favorite shows ever and a strong reason for it is the protagonist and villain are so engaging as well as the story that is being unraveled throughout. I don’t often binge shows but I couldn’t put it down.
