Merritt was a friend of mine. And Buttrick it's pronounced just like it looks, like butt, not butane. He did not die squeezed by Hollywood. And he did not die by suicide, slow or otherwise. He was vivacious, and kind, and brilliant, and absolutely loved life! He died of AIDS. No it was not an easy death, and yes it affected his mind at the end. But it is an insult to this life loving young man to claim that he committed suicide. And I never knew him to be an intravenous drug user. He could not have kept the grueling schedule for shooting Square Pegs, picked up at 4:00 am and taken to the set to prepare, and then shooting the whole day, had he been. It was the 80s, and yes he dabbled and played, like everyone else who had a passion for life. The tragedy was a terrible unknown, uncaring virus that killed people for engaging in the most loving, intimate, and caring facet of human existence.

These stories are so heartbreaking. I grew up in the 80s and remember how one minute, you saw an actor on television or in movies, and the next moment, it was "out of sight, out of mind". So very sad. R.I.P. Merritt Butrick.

The title is offensive. He didn’t choose AIDS.  Dammed AI

I knew Merritt. Not well, as I met him in a community center tennis class and going to the same high school. He was a year older than me, so we didn’t run in the same circles. he always seemed like I good and caring person to me and I tried to watch whatever he was in. I have to admit some of those later films were beyond me, but I can say I went to school with Captain Kirk’s son.
