Excellent commentary. I always wondered how that guy went off the pier at the final chase. Now I know the details!

Thank you so much for your insight with action scenes in the featured movie: in it's day there wasn't any (obvious) CGI or green/blue screen instead of locations where movies are made or a studio - recently I viewed a documentary about those within the industry.

Extremely unfair that they never get the recognition others get all the time (veterans Denise Ryan and Jim Dowdall speak about) without such people, the movie and TV industry is lost without them - 👍.

Bogdanovich probably made the call to credit the stunt actors. He was a great director.

looks like they really cut that VW bus up in a very precise way to get it to crumple

Fantastic presentation of a fantastic film. Regarding the ladder scene, I had come across information on IMCDb (not IMDb, mind you) about a uncertainty you raise. According to someone who posted on that website, the lead chase car, the 52 Cadillac 75 limousine was actually his parents' mode of conveyance for their large family. The film company bought the now 20 year old Cadillac, and it was used as the gangsters' chase car with the crooked house detective (a pre-Dukes of Hazzard Sorrell Booke) and his accomplices holding hostages of Mr. Larabee, Hugh Simon, and THE Eunice Burns (as in Madelyn Kahn). The car was so well used that it was spontaneous for the bonnet / hood went flying off its hinges after it brakes sharply at the base of the ladder and turns left. Yes, it seemed curious in a film where everything seemed planned to the minutest of details, it just happened, and Peter Bogdanovich just left it in. I can watch this film endlessly it is so jammed packed with gags both visual and linguistic. A masterpiece. EDIT: Yes, the stunt performers were owed the credits at the end because they made half the movie. The accomplishment of the stuntman doubling the "golf enthusiast"/government agent "Mr. Jones" is astounding when you explain the technique. It's just a handful of seconds caught on film, but the amount of effort to film just that one gag is astounding. I would think it would be done under much safer circumstances now (though hopefully not CGI!!!), but blindly having to go off the dock and try to clear the car at 70 MPH is TERRIFYING. That he was rescued unconscious is even more so. Let's hear it for the stunt performers!!!

Definitely one of my favorite films! A masterpiece! So rich and fast paced that multiple viewings is not tiresome! In answer to the question about the hood / bonnet flying off the Cadillac limousine as it just avoids the ladder, it was not in the script. The car was already 20 years old at that time long out of service as a funeral home or corporate vehicle. By then it was well-worn, and I understand was owned by a local family who used it to transport their brood. Between the age and serious abuse in the film, it is hardly surprising that the hinges broke. I don't know if multiple vehicle were even used. Bogdanovich did some brilliant guerilla filming like the unauthorized drive down the steps as mentioned in the narration, as well as the stunt early on when Barbra Steisand jaywalks across the street to the hotel, forcing a car to brake suddenly, and the one trailing to rear end it. Those two cars were rented, with Bogdanovich expressingly stipulating collision insurance for both vehicles. I had no idea the speed of the cars driving down the dock into San Francisco Bay was 70 MPH! When one considers all the comic yet exceptionally dangerous stunts seen in this film, it is very interesting and certainly warranted that this is the first US film to expressly credit the stunt performers. But as you point out, the taxi driver is a stunt performer, but he does have face time and dialogue. The jolly, nutty, bowler-hat-wearing Cadillac convertible driver was also a stuntman, from Australia. Thanks for this video production!

My favorite movie ever...couldn't begin to say how many times I've seen it. Anywho, I thought it was the first U.S. film to list stunt players in the credits but wasn't 100% certain. Now I'm going to go ahead an finally claim that certainty on your authority! Thanks! (P.S., the movie is about 4 identical bags with different stuff in them, but I guess at any given point everybody thinks there's only one bag...So, we'll give it to ya! 😆)
