The People of Rooks Rest pledged to Queen Rhaenyra in exchange for Dragon protection. So Princess Rhaenys can't just run away because Vhagar shows up. So long as the people at that castle are alive; Rhaenys has to try and protect them. Otherwise, Rhaenyra's claim will weaken. That's how it works.

The reason they so quickly crowned Aegon was because they had been planning it all along. No matter what happened with Allison it would have been the same.

  RiP Rhaenys and Meleys.
Two of my favourite characters.
The Queen that Never Was will be sorely missed.

Rhaenys couldn't have left. Not if she wanted to be seen as a coward. She was sent there to protect Rook's Rest. Not run away in the middle of the fight to let it be burned by Aemond. She also likely felt some guilt about this all being her fault: she "ran away" once, at the corronation. If she had burned them all before, none of this would happen, so she wasn't going to run again.

I always thought rhaenys went back to try to hurt or kill aemond after she seen him burn his own brother. I think she realized how cruel aemond was. she said no war is as bloody as a war between kin.

I hate when people say Rhaenys should of just left! She couldn’t just turn and run! She would have weakened Rhaenyras claim and forever been known as a coward!!! Instead she went down with her Dragon in fire and blood like a true Targaryen!

After the dragons clash and Vhagar falls, it looks like shes flying out to sea. So its possible she was heading back to dragon stone at that point.. she obviously didnt expect the attack from below at that height.

The reason he told Vhagar to wait was seeing Aegon turning up on his Dragon as he wasn't supposed to be there, Aemond With Vhagar was "The Trap" that He and Cole had Set Up, But for King Aegon it was a spur of the moment thing in Aegon's Ignorant Stupidity , So he was going to see if Rhaenys and Meleys could take out The King for him and if it looked a bit dicey then he would move in and under the Guise of Helping the King would Take Them Both Out, Remember what Aemond said to Cole when they went looking for Aegon in Kings Landing to "Crown" Him ???????
" It is I who Studies the Histories and Practice with the Blade and Ride The Largest Dragon, When they come looking For Me I Intend To Be Found"
