Lol, "when we came with cameras to report on the story, they didn't tell people to move"

I'm kind of shocked about this, I have been to these public spaces, I've sat down, cleaned my bag out, eaten, just sat and watched the birds, often times to just generally sit down and waste some time before I have to go somewhere else, no one has ever told me to get up, that's crazy I wish someone would try to tell me to leave a public space 😅 I promise I will be more trouble than it's worth

It is like on Long Island when developers agree to set aside land for a park/playground. As long as people are not sleeping on the benchs or making messes, they Should be allowed to sit.

I call bull on them visiting every 3 years and making sure they're compliant. There are two in my neighborhood which have NO seating whatsoever. At one of them the doormen will shoe you away if you get close with a dog.

Many buildings were required to have a bunch of ground space open to the public in order to build. In typical NY fashion though, they built them, and simply closed them off. Worse comes to worst, they get a fine.

Good for him and good for your station for reporting on this. Open to the public means just that!

The benches are on the outside of the buildings which like they said on the news, the buildings have agreed to allow these parts to remain available for the public to use for sitting. The security guards should have been trained to know this, which shows how poorly the property management trains them. If the benches were meant to only be for residents, there would have been fencing or gates all around them or they would be in the insular parts of the building complex.

Privately owned public space sounds like an oxymoron.
