I Thought I Could Handle This… I Was Wrong

I am 71 yo with a long history of motorcycle ownership but also a long layoff. I had an epiphany late last year that I have limited years left and they need to be spent pursuing joy. That meant a return to motorcycling. I chose a ‘26 Rocket3 GT. I have 1200 miles on it and I love the bike!  The vast majority of my rides are less than 120 miles so I don’t care about the range. I much more care about the giggles you showed when you open up that magnificent throttle—which is even better with the new Storm versions.  The low speed handling is fine. You must counter steer instead of trying to turn the bars in the direction of the turn as you were doing early on.  One adapts to each bike with time and learns to get the best of it. The power of this bike is unique among two wheelers and the joy of it overcomes any deficiency you can possibly come up with.

I thought long and hard about buying a Rocket III but decided I would probably cease to exist if I did. A man has to know his limitations.

This bike is not on my wish list, but I love the fact that it exists.

Torque! Nothing feels better than a bike with loads of torque.

I have had small  displacement bikes as a teen and big bikes as an adult. Looking back, the smaller bikes 150cc and above were more fun for me. You really had to work them to get that 1/4 more horsepower out of them, to take them to the absolute limit, to combine riding skill, gear selection, and road to get the absolute most out of them. A game, a constant challenge, and it felt good. With the big bikes all I had to do was aim them, put on the throttle, and not head into curves at excessive speed. Different strokes for different folks.

The Rocket 3 was always an insane bike! A 2.5 litre engine! That's bigger than most saloon engines.

"Counter-steering" makes short work of steering!

I have the "old" rocket iii from 2006 and it's already a beast - totally love it. The R is just even more beasty!

Definitely a bike you positive steer on, mercifully that's all I was taught during my DAS so hopefully I'll be fine with it.

Every YouTube reviewer does that crazy giggle the first time they open the throttle on a rocket three.
