  #1, Don&apos;t collect water with obvious contaminants in it. &nbsp;Collect only the clearest water you can find, avoid dirt, sticks, etc. &nbsp;But if the only water that&apos;s available to you has debris in it, use a piece of loosely woven fabric to strain it as you pour water from the dipping vessel into the collection vessel.<br>#2, Once you get home, put your freshly collected water into a large, food grade container. &nbsp;Go for something that holds at least 5 gallons, bigger is better and wider is better than taller but you want it at least a foot deep. &nbsp;Don&apos;t put a tight lid on it, keep a clean piece of fabric over it to keep mosquitoes from getting in, and let any volatiles evaporate out. &nbsp;Install a valve in the side that&apos;s at least 5 inches above the bottom. &nbsp;Let your freshly collected water sit undisturbed in this container for at least a day, longer is better. &nbsp;Heavy contaminants will settle on the bottom and light ones will float on the surface. &nbsp;Take water out via the valve in the side. &nbsp;Stop draining it when the top of the water gets down to within 3 inches above the valve. &nbsp;But make sure to stop before any discolored water on the top gets into the valve. &nbsp;This process leaves a large amount of water that you will not use for drinking. &nbsp;Dump the unused water on ornamental plants or appropriate food producing plants. &nbsp;Read up on which food producing plants are safe to put questionable water on.<br>#3, Now you use your terracotta pot to filter the clear water you got from step #2. &nbsp;Use the charcoal here if you have it because it really broadens the protection you can get. &nbsp;<br>#4, The last step is to use the SODIS method to kill the remaining micro-organisms including viruses. &nbsp;Put your filtered water into a clean, clear, and transparent bottle of 2 liters, or less. &nbsp;Use plastic bottles made of PET or PETE with recycle code &quot;1&quot;. &nbsp;Those types of plastics transmit UV light better than most glass. &nbsp;If you hate plastic, use clear glass but follow the SODIS guidelines. &nbsp;Put a tight-fitting lid or cap on the bottle then lay it horizontally in direct sunlight. &nbsp;The ultraviolet rays kill whatever living organisms that got through the terracotta. &nbsp;Study the SODIS guidelines to see how long to leave it in the sunshine. &nbsp;The guidelines also provide additional bits of advice that help produce the best results. &nbsp;They are not complicated or difficult and they&apos;re available on-line for free.<br><br>All of these steps and all of these containers require regular attention and cleaning. &nbsp;Bad methods will end up with you getting sick.

  i have been using earthen &nbsp;pots( matka) for 40 years plus harvesting rain water for as many years and guess fit as a horse. i am 76!!

  Here in Brazil, clay filters are still a thing. They are considered old-fashioned for sure, but many people still use them. They are also widely manufctured and sold. I just bought my first clay filter online, and I CANNOT WAIT for it to arrive. With the world becoming as scary as it is, I want to make sure my family always has clean water to drink.

  Well searching for lead free terracotta is frustrating. &nbsp;So, I guess I’ll just order my own food grade lead free &amp; chemical free Terracotta and make my own water filtration system. &nbsp;I will be using a metal spigot instead &amp; just use my stainless Berkey water container I no longer use because water still tested bad after filtering. &nbsp;Thank you! &nbsp;Now off to watch throwing pottery vids. &nbsp;lol - I can do this.

  The first step of water filtration should always be through cloth, or you&apos;ll be cleaning the pot out every day.
