The Psychology Of People Who Don't Post On Social Media Anymore

There's a photo on your phone from three weeks ago that you almost posted. You wrote a caption, deleted it, wrote a shorter one, then closed the screen and kept scrolling for another forty minutes. You never decided to stop posting. The drafts just stopped leaving the house. But you never left. You know who got engaged, who moved, whose kid started school. You could brief a stranger on the life of someone you haven't spoken to in six years. Going quiet solved one problem and kept the other. Posting exposed you to being judged. Scrolling exposes you to comparison. You fixed the first and kept the second, every night. In this video: Why posting got hard, and what changed about the room you were posting into Five things that happened in the quiet, including the one nobody warns you about The trap in the obvious fix: what going fully dark actually costs you What the research says about social media breaks, including the part that argues against this video Four practices for being in contact with people again without standing in front of everyone you've ever met Research mentioned: Alice Marwick & danah boyd: context collapse Erving Goffman: self-presentation, used as a lens Vogel, Rose, Roberts & Eckles (2014): upward social comparison online Krasnova et al.
