Turning back due to knowledge of changing conditions is not quiting, it's wisdom.

To make something like this a requirement is a cruel punishment.

When you are in charge of a group of kids in a life and death situation, quitting is not something to be ashamed of, it's actually a sign that you're a responsible leader, intelligent enough to asses the situation and make the right decisions. Terrible story ...

My heart goes out to the parents.

That's is just sheer stupidity to be required to climb a dangerous, life threatening mountain in order to graduate. Stupid school leaders.

Making climbing the mountain a requirement is ludicrous.

Outward bound instructor--professional guide--multiple teachers and experienced climbers. And none of them thought to check the forecast.

As an Oregon resident and parent, I would never, EVER, in 1 million years, let my children go into something like that without
1. Me Being there
2. feeling 1000% certain that there would be zero atmospheric complications
3. Felt like my child and I could handle it and had enough experience prior.
4. ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR GUT!

This is just SAD! 😢

These were my dads peers! He opted not to go, but he still remembers it. They still hold a vigil every year.

I went to OES for many years, they tell us the watered down story of this each year and tell us to do community service. I didn't know how bad the preparation for this trip or just how horrible it was until I did my own research. Thank you for telling the entire story and giving justice to all that died.
