Atrioc Reacts to Why Japanese People Don't "Want" Things Anymore

I don't really think what Alexander was saying is that he wishes he could live without desire, but that if he could not have become Alexander the Great and achieved all of his feats he would prefer to not have desire at all like Diogenes. Which I think is also kind of what Japan is going through. People are unable to achieve what they wish to desire so they are trying to get by without having desires at all. Clearly the average person there is actually NOT content with that and that's why there is a major issue.

I wouldnt say the young have a zen buddhist mentality against desire. I think its a overwelhming feeling of nihilism. You find now a days the youth hate themselves for not being good enough and having no prospects. So their outlook on life basically drops to the floor and then somehow drops further after that

Combination of less money, less opportunity, work culture being a literal Amazon Death Cycle...
and at the end of a hard work day you're supposed to get excited over the new pokemon merch or something? Insane ask...

You learn you can't have anything so you stop trying to get anything

I'll be real, bro is forgetting alexander is the son of philip of Macedonia who created the conditions (country stability, strong organized military, etc etc) to make alexander the person with the potential to become this legendary figure. It wasnt juat alexander's personal choice become alexander wholly. You can have indepent desire and do introspection as much as you want but if macedonia has 30 years of stagnation before alexander, are we getting alexander? Lets be real

Counter point on the "people don't have desires". People DO very much still have desires. The problem is that jobs aren't paying anywhere near enough to afford the baseline that people can then launchboard off into their desires from and any job that DOES pay enough is kept so far away from attainability that it kills any motivation to try and get there.

Alexander also died young despite his achievements. By all accounts diogenes lived a long life and was content if i remember correctly.

17:11 Spot on this. People have to believe that working hard will build them a life worth living. You can’t expect people to work for a future that they think isn’t going to yield fruit. Modern society teaches that making your way in the world through hard work is a rarity. Rather the reality is the same pay, more work, and no promotions. People can’t start businesses because they’d torpedo their lives and they’d likely just be stomped out by monopolies. The future isn’t worth investing in to most young people because the future looks like it’s only going to get worse.

I think his point at the end was a little rushed, but what he was saying is that a lot of people in Japan DO have desires. That people "without desire" do exist and we should leave them alone, but most people do have desires they are just so beaten down.
