The 90s Internet Mysteries Iceberg Explained

Hey guys, there was a minor editing mistake that we needed to clip out of the video after we had already uploaded it. The editing mistake is fixed, but the on screen timestamps shown for viewers that want to skip disturbing entries are no longer entirely accurate. Skipping to the timestamps shown will still skip disturbing content, but will cut in to the first sentence of the entry. If you simply go back 5-10 seconds after going to the timestamps everything should be good. Sorry about this mistake! □

"... how stupid internet users were in the '90s." Little did we know it was downhill from there.

7:55 I remember I was literally playing Megaman X on emulator on my PC as the year rolled over from 1999 to 2000, and my dad yelled at me from across the house "did the PC explode yet?", and I said "Nope!" LMAO

I miss when being on the internet was fun. Now everyone just goes on the same 10 social media websites/apps every day, its lame.

I LOVE everything 2000s so im pretty hype about the 2000s video

It's "Princess Peach's Castle", not "Mario's Castle". Mario is a heroic plumber. Plumbers don't typically have castles.

Finally an iceberg video that doesn't regurgitate the same old crap that all the other content creators poop out every few months. Highly enjoyed the video.

I had “Y2K bug” pajamas with a little anthropomorphic bug in them. It’s so sad because despite the underlying fear of Y2K causing societal collapse there was quite a bit of hope for the new millennium, we were living the future.

2:30 In case you think the Pikablu story is too dumb to be believable by people, the entire reason some people think the blue-haired girl from Dragon Ball is named "Bulma Briefs" (its her dad's given name, not her surname) is ALSO from merchandise not double-checked for consistency. Very little of that stuff is vetted by actual creators before an IP becomes big.

the biggest difference with surfing the old web was the fact there was no "commentary space" full of youtubers, wikis, and subreddits that very publicly listed and catalogued things in a consolidated way. When you found something weird, or heard about something, you really only had the primary source and a handful of secondary sources (i.e. your friends) who you'd see talking about it.

this made every rabbithole or mystery feel personal, instead of being part of a bigger audience where updates and theories were widely debated by thousands of people.

as a layperson today its basically impossible to jump straight in, because there's always going to be whole communities who have dropped hundreds of hours into unpacking every available detail. on one hand its allowed for greater depth, but for most people it means you're consuming all this content as a passive observer.

the old internet felt more like a network of equally anonymous nobodies, while today it's bifurcated into influencers and audience

My earliest memory of the Internet was my mom creating a screenname for eight-year-old me, followed by the family computer screaming at me back in 1994.
