My Mysterious Marriage to Lady Poverty<br><br>~ voice of Francis in Holy Madness, The Gifts of Poverty <br><br><br>I leaked out from behind my every mask,<br>flowed into the streets and washed up<br>like a scuttled ship on the shores<br>of Lady Poverty. She was no beauty,<br>my muse, frightening, ugly, toothless,<br>dirty and sick, but for me she was<br>what any man loves, veiled mystery.<br>You think I did not wonder at myself,<br>caution myself, attempt the subtle compromise.<br>You think there was no in between.<br>How easy to be the untouched giver of kindness.<br>How comfortable before God, father and friends.<br>What was it that moved my hand to touch her?<br>I am a merchant, and I tell you<br>it was not about paying the price.<br>I was a ransomed warrior. It is not that.<br>It was truth joined me to her.<br>She felt like my heart at last stripped of denial,<br>yet she was who she was.<br>She felt like the indwelling ocean<br>I hid even from myself.<br>Her compassion for me was boundless,<br>her humility, her simplicity, her beauty.<br>She was wisdom, holy wisdom.<br>I fed from the bread of her,<br>followed her everywhere.<br>When I died I looked like her.<br>She is the seed that flowered red on the mountain.<br>She is the soil, and she is the depths.<br>She gave me the passion<br>to love in the body, a wild hunger<br>to compassion in my soul.<br>I called upon God when I could not find him,<br>when all I could see was suffering.<br>For only the price of my own eyes<br>I was given a taste of the love’s glory.<br>With the poor I wept and laughed.<br>Now when I grieve I truly grieve<br>for there are few who come to court her.
