This story seemed more realistic. The children knew their mother very well and understood her habits, so they knew exactly where to go. I would also add that the people understood that sound attracted the creatures, which is why they made an effort to remain unusually quiet. Another realistic aspect is that slow-moving creatures that become isolated and confined to one area would eventually die off. However, if they form clusters or groups, they become a much greater threat. The story also highlights that every person's skills are valuable and that working together increases the group's chances of survival.
